Biffy Clyro

Opposites

(2013, 14th Floor Records) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - Opposites

Biffy Clyro is back with a double-album and DVD about them recording this album in L.A. with Garth Richardson. (Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others…)

More again than on “Only Revolutions”, you have an avalanche of atypical instruments : Bagpipes, Church Organ, Mariachi band…
I love the build-up and the part at 2:09 in A Girl And His Cat which is my favorite song in “Opposites”. That song is close to their earliest albums and rich in melodies. Same comments for Sounds Like Balloon.

Trumpet or Tap is an amazing song, the riffs are terrific and the singing amazing. It is slightlty different from what they play usually and it’s a good surprize.

Stingin’ Belle’s Finale is amazing, I love the way they mixed the bag pipes and it is a really interesting soundscape at 3:06. The “Porcupine” rhyme is cool haha.

Picture A Knife Fight is funny, I love the à la Andrew W.K touch.

As there is many songs, I’ll authorize myself a top 6 instead of a top 5.

In The Fog, it sounds that they added here a Bon Iver touch, well-done.

That double-album is great, with good songs and some surprize.

Revolutions // Live At Wembley

(2011, 14th Floor Records) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - Revolutions Live At Wembley

I was waiting for years for a live album by Biffy Clyro and what a success.

As explained below, I’m not a huge fan of all the layers in “Only Revolutions”.

But after seing them live, the 15th of December 2009, @ le Trabendo in Paris. I re-discovered their last song in a raw light with no/less layers of violins.

That’s precisely what you’ll have here. The video is interesting eventhough the edit may seems weird maybe due to way too many slow-motion : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6KEHF1z40I

For fans.

Only Revolutions

(2009, 14th Floor Records) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - Only Revolutions

First it was hard for me to listen to that record, being surprized by all these layers of violin. But after I could see them live, I discovered these songs a second light, raw and love them in the end.

Let’s start with the great energy within Cloud Of Stink.

I love the part at 1:36 in Shock Shock and its terrific Finale.

Mountains is one of their new singlee : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfzwM4pdyxU&ob=av2e (A very funny video clip and great part at 2:25)

That Golden Rule will remain in your mind, close to their early albums : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWUF2oiWe2I&ob=av3e

Born On A Horse is a little bit different, but well-composed.

Another great album.

Puzzle

(2007, 14th Floor Records) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - Puzzle

That “Puzzle” album got one of their best song ever : Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies. So many great ideas ! (As the part at 1:00) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tslBd-ItJ-c&ob=av2e

I love the part at 2:44 in Get Fucked Stud.

A Whole Child Ago will remind you of their first songs.

How to forget Saturday Superhouse ? : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjaTCcLUO7M&ob=av2n

Superbe, again.

Infinity Land

(2004, Beggars Banquet) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - Infinity Land

I’ve heard of Biffy Clyro with that album, thanks to Sylvain Bekaert, aka with the man with the cymbals-color-hairs, many years ago.

I loved that weir-rock side, the crazy screamings alternated with Simon’s terrific voice. I love to the original tuning and chords they use. That’s what you’ll find in Strung To Your Ribcage.

The part at 0:54 “I Take You For Granted” is one of my favorite ever.

You can say the same comments about Some Kind Of Wizard and There Is No Suck Thing As A Jaggy Snake (What a great Finale).

This album single is Glitter And Trauma : A chain of very interesting parts : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP0Xu-9uJ30

To conclude I love the vocals in The Kids From Kibble And The Fist Of Light.

A Must-Have-In-Your-Collec

The Vertigo Of Bliss

(2003, Beggars Banquet Records) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - The Vertigo Of Bliss

“The Vertigo Of Bliss” is a record I re-discovered recently too.

Let’s start with A Day Of… which is a great song, an evolution of their punk/grunge songs with much more work on the singing.I love a lot Bodies In Flight which make me think of their future “Infinity Land” and its screamed Finale at 4:25.

Liberate The Illiterate / A Mong Among Mingers ‘ melodies are absolutely terrific.

Then Toys, toys, toys, choke, toys, toys, toys (What an unbearable name to type) became one of their many singles.

Another Must-Have.

Blackened Sky

(2002, Beggars Banquet Records) Scotland.

Biffy Clyro - Blackened Sky

Very first album by Biffy Clyro that I re-discovered pretty recently.

They are in that grunge/punk wave and you’ll feel this in their amazing 57 : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0b1FgWrj3o but in The Go-Slow too with its almost-hardcore Finale.

Justboy is one of their single song : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuAgM9dgL-s

A good record
