Deftones

(2003, Maverick Records) USA, California.

Deftones - Deftones

Back To School (Mini Maggit) Ep

(2001, Maverick Records) USA, California.

Deftones - Back To School (Mini Maggit) Ep

White Pony

(2000, Maverick Records) USA, California.

Deftones - White Pony

“White Pony” est également un de mes albums préférés de leur discographie.

Digital Bath est un monstre niveau production et au niveau des sons de guitare.

Feiticeira (énorme passage à 1:36) et Korea (super à 1:48) sont vraiment très mélancoliques et une nouvelle performance vocale par Chino Moreno.

Pink Maggit ou connue sous le nom de Back To School est un titre un peu plus “rap” mais très réussi également (voir la chronique de l’Ep).

Street Carp est aussi un titre avec une mélodie magnifique.

Un autre must have.

Around The Fur

(1997, Maverick Records) USA, California.

Deftones - Around The Fur

A tort.

My Own Summer (Shove It) et MX (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9U87Fx2kQeQ)

J’aime beaucoup Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away) et son superbe break à 3:09.

Adrenaline

(1995, Maverick Records) USA, California.

Deftones - Adrenaline

Un Must Have.

Look What I Did

Look What I Did - Atlas Drugged

I discovered that band with Fabrice Aure, and their videoclip for I’m Majoring In Psychologyhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu3qYl0NGYE

First of all, I really liked their sound and their sides à la Daughters. The part at 0:57 is terrific.

Some of the riffs reminds me of the rock’n'roll riffs from Everytime I Die.

Serf Song at 0:30 reminds me of Man Man’s music a little. In that songs, the choirs are great !

Fade To Daft is really weird but well-done.

I love My New Girlfriend, Leo Strauss and its finale at 2:28.

I think that in the other songs the pop side is too strong and I don’t really like it.

We can’t help but notice the good artwork.

Some good songs.

Jackson And His Computer Band

Smash

(2005, Warp Records) France.

Jackson And His Computer Band - Smash

Here is the first album by Jackson And His Computer Band, One of the only french Warp’s signature.

I remember that jako made me listen to Arpeggio and Jackson music was so surprizing with all these wide reverb and samples layers. I love the part at 2:42.

What a beautiful mother’s day gift : Rock On is one of my favorite song in this record. The synthesizers at 2:21 are genius.

Tropical Metal is really interesting : I love the melody and I like how he adds layers of piano. It reminds me of the japanese band Deceptikon.

The part at 2:09 in Teen Beat Ocean is terrific.

Finally Headache won’t give you some : When the rhythmic part arrives at 0:36, the party starts.

There is three songs not in my top 5 that I love : first, Minidoux, really simple but with awesome harmonies.

There is too TV Dogs (Cathodica’s Letter) with a featuring with Mike Ladd, who did great with Grand Pianoramax.

I like the beginning of Fast Life.

Jackson deserve his Warp deal : A Must Have.

We want more !

Black Spirals

Consuming The Rests

(2010, S.B.S. Records) France, Paris.

Black Spirals - Consuming The Rests

Here is a parisian band discovered on http://www.metalorgie.com.

That band delivers a powerful music in between Converge, Magrudergrind or Discarga (particularly on their song Beast Of Burden)

The first good point is their great song, and precisely the combination of the bass/guitar render, and you feel that since their first song Refrigerium.

Illusions is really really heavy and I love the rage used to beat the tempo at 0:11.

I love the Finale at 0:43 in Nec Deus Intersit, Nisi Dignus Vindice Nodus.

Inferno should be awesome live, I have to see them.

A very good record.

Heliport

Désarroi Esthétique

(2011, Hip Hip Hip Records) France.

Heliport - Désarroi Esthétique

French with a sound like that ? What a surprize !

Heliport’s music is in between a angry Bloc Party, The Fall of Troy, Tera Melos or one of this band from Norway (Rumble In Rhodos, the latest Jr Ewing’s release…)

I really appreciate the great production and the strings sound.

But added to that great production there is great skills in composition too: Great riffs ! (like in Patchwork Of Black And White or Désarroi Esthétique).

There is great things with the vocals (A Signal To Jersey), and with great baking vocals too (Waiting For The Frame).

There is some screaming : Jérome Kerviel Is A Market Man, great.

The only weird think is their accent, but maybe this will charm you english people !

To be continued !

Africa Hitech

93 Million Miles

(2011, Warp Records) UK.

Africa Hitech - 93 Million Miles

I just received this new Warp release, collaboration of Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313) and Steve Spacek.

Let’s start with a major song : Do U Wanna Fight ?

I listen to that song everyday since its released : I was really impressed by this concept of mixing experimental electronic music , a traditional african beat and this terrific autotuned vocals very finely.

This is music’s future.

I  was a little bit disappointed to don’t find other songs like that. The other tracks are more kind of minimale electro, which I don’t really appreciate (except Our Luv and its funny video games part at 7:00).

I really like the song Foot Step with an awesome synthesizer made by Mark, with a great rhythmic pattern too.

I can’t wait for another release with more song with vocals.

Battles

Gloss Drop

(2011, Warp Records) USA, NY.

Battles - Gloss Drop

New album for Battles, after Tyondai Braxton leaves the band.D*mn, it’s precisely his voice that turns Battles from an interesting band to a cult band in my mind.

Let’s start with the amazing Ice Cream‘s videoclip : http://www.vimeo.com/24380624 : With a superbe featuring with Matias Aguayo, who released “Ay Ay Ay” last year ( A Jako’s discovery).
I like a lot the other featurings with Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead (Sweetie And Shag) and the one with Yamantaka Eye from the amazing Boredoms (Sundome).
The song with Gary Numan, My Machines, is interesting.
I only keep n my top 5 two instrumentals songs which really bring new sounscapes : Rolls Bayce, which is a slow and terrific  build-up and Wall Street which reminds me of the songs I loved on “Mirrored” (great part at 4:08).
I saw them live in Paris with Tyondai, at l’Elysée Montmartre, before it burned, and It was a great moment.
To conclude, “Gloss Drop” is still a great record, from which I prefer the songs with vocals. I hope they will multiply these featurings in a future release.

Mirrored

(2007, Warp Records) USA, NY.

Battles - Mirrored

I discovered Battles with that album, during my usual Warp Records surveillance.

I first saw their two great vidéoclips for Atlas : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU and Tonto : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LLAN29W-4w .
What a surprize : Before I didn’t know band with rock/elecro/loops and weird vocals like that.
Tyondai Braxton did a great work with his pitched or vocoded vocals which are a big plus in Battles music, added to the great music of their first eps.
It turns their music into something you can listen to all day long.
My favorite song is Leyendecker with a sick sound for the couple drum/bass and terrific vocals layers.
Then comes Rainbow (instrumental) and its great part at 3:03. Bravo.
I love TIJ which is a great build-up with a good work with the breathing noises at the beginning and a great vocal riff, which remains in head for a long time.
Ddiamond is a song with a really interesting rhythmic pattern and surprizing vocals experimentations.
This album is an absolute Must-Have.

EP C/ B EP

(2006, Warp Records) USA, NY.

Battles - EP C / B EP

This is the compilation of their 2 Eps after “Tras”.
You’ll still find instrumental music but much more fine and produced (like in Ipt2).
SZ2 starts slowly but I really like the variation at 5:44.
I like the way the sounds evolve in Hi / Lo and its part at 2:08.
Dance seems to be an evolved Fantasy.

A very good Ep.

TRAS

(2004, Cold Sweat Records) USA, NY.

Battles - Tras

First Ep for Battles, the rock/electro/eperimental/loops badn from Warp Records.
That band is the combination of members from other huge bands (Helmet, Don Caballero…) For more information, have a look to their wikipedia page.
With Tras, you’ll see the very beginnings of the band with an instrumental music and some very interesting soundscapes.
Fantasy is a weird song in between beatbox, loops et electro.
They’ll combine these elements in their future releases.
An interesting Ep.

Nuclear Rabbit

Mutopia

(2003, DIY) USA, California.

Cover de Nuclear Rabbit - Mutopia

I discover  Nuclear Rabbit on an Arno Matendouce’s compilation.

This record is really, really hard to find (at an affordable price) but I finally found one.

This band is a total musical UFO with 4 crazy guys and a bass player who play on 9, 11 or 30 strings bass.

The bass play is really technical and in the foreground in the mix (and the guitar in the very background sometimes) (What Would A Man-He Do ?).

The vocals are really weird, but after listening this album again and again I finally liked it.

The drums are interesting like in Alone With My Clone.

The real power of the Nuclear Rabbit is skills to create great ambiences and efficient riffs like in Lemmings and its great part at 0:44.

I really love Look Who’s Crossed-Eyed Now ! intro and its terrific (indian ?) part at 2:41.

The artwork is great too.

A Must Have.

Kaki King

…Until We Felt Red

(2006, Velour Recordings) USA, NYC.

Behind her grunge geek style, Kaki King is a very inspired, original and sensible artist.

Her album « Until We Felt Red » is the perfect balance between her first instrumental albums et the last few albums she did which are more pop. The vibe is really quite, trippy and sometimes sounds jazzy and dissonant.

I really like You Don’t Have To Be Afraid (8 minutes) for its progression and the quality of its arrangements.

Goby is the perfect soundtrack for a lift to holidays.

Until We Felt Red shows us how she master the lapsteel.

Yellowcake is also a very good tune.

Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep ?

Snapshot Lamento

(2007, DIY) Luxembourg.

D.A.D.O.E.S is an awesome Screamo/Hardcore band. I was lucky to see them at Ieperfest 2008 edition, just before they split.

After a really powerful intro with Renaissance and its terrific part at 1:05, you’ll enjoy Réveille and its great part too at 1:39.

You just have to listen to Cité Radieuse to appreciate their great skills in composition and melodies. there is many breaks in that song and they all rock (and what a Finale at 2:28).

I love how the main riff comes back at the end at 3:09 in 4 Shots.

I really like too New Voice Finale.

L’artwork is well done and the lyrics are politically commited and with many details.

A Must Have.
