Triolet
(2011, Still Muzik) France.
Brand new Ep for the Frenchie’s electro scene
My friend Patrick VocalTeknix made me discover “Triolet”
First of all the visuals are well done : classy.
You’ll find 8 tracks, originals and remixes.
My favorite song is L’Abandon Des Bonnes Manières : I really the synthesizers and the way that the vocals are mixed with the rhythmics.
The two other original tracks are a little bit too lounge for me, but the quality is still there.
Then comes fine remixes :
Anybody Love (Souleance Remix) with a terrific synthesizers and a new interesting rhytmic pattern.
You’ll find a brutal remix of L’Abandon Des Bonnes Manières, by Tommie Keeston, there it’s mayhem : I love the way that the synthesizers escape from the compression at 1:08 and of course the robot vocals.
Finally you can’t help but notice a remix of the same song by Hat & Hoodie, with some high-pitched micro-percussions which reminds me of Major Lazer’s Pon De Floor.
I really like too their promotion campaign : http://emmanuelle.nu/2011/05/glory-wall-by-emmanuelle/
Emmanuelle are on their way to conquest the floor !

Darwin Deez
(2009, Lucky Number Records) USA, NY.
My friend Jacques-André Dupont makes me discover Darwin Deez.
So here is an electro rock band really interesting.
Darwin creates a strong musical and visual identity, designed by his bass / guitar and Drumbox sound, his voice and his look.
You will appreciate his videoclip for Constellations : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37sKI7d7-xA.
My favorite song is The City, mainly for the fine chords he uses and the modulation at 0:36.
I really like the pitch down he does sometimes on his rhytmics patterns like at 1:09.
Radar Detector has a funny rhythmic pattern too.
I love the part at 1:31 in Bad Day.
To conclude, great finale at 3:24 in The Bomb Song.
A very good record.

Tomboy
(2011, Paw Tracks Records) USA, Maryland.
I discovered Panda Bear, solo project of Noah Benjamin Lennox, from Animal Collective, on http://www.pitchfork.com/.
I listen to a couple of songs on myspace and I loved Last Night At The Jetty : I liked fast the amazing reverb and his weird guitars riffs.
Many people does that kind of music these days, and usually I don’t like it.
But here everything sounds fine and interesting (I love the part at 1:11).
Same feelings about Slow Motion and Tomboy.
I really love the build up at 2:12 in Friendship Bracelet.
A Good Surprize.

T.A.W.F.A.W.W.
(2011, DIY) Scotland, Glasgow.
New album from Take A Worm For A Walk Week.
Evenif the silkscreening and the design is great and beautiful, I regret that the support is a CD-R (because of its weak shelf life).
But my disappointment vanished as soon as I listened to their amazing music.
This Luscious Things was online a long time ago as a teaser, and you could have a preview of their evolution with brasses and some Man Man’s touch.
I really love all the effects they use and appreciate Joe’s vocals.
I had a crush on Slugsworth awith that sad and groovy rhythmic and this crazyness with the brasses.
The combination taping + brass in Technology is a success.
The beginning of Like My Pacifier? reminds me of Mastodon and the songs from “The Monroe Transfer”.
I can’t wait for the LP release.

Split With With Scissors And Orion Arm
(2008, Small Town Records) Scotland, Glasgow.
The three songs from that split CD are in between their first album and “The Monroe Transfer”.
I still love their complex riffs and Joe’s fast flow (like in Control)
I love Jonny’s idea with hithat, on all the songs, and particullary on Personality Prolapse and Blackout.
Cool.

Second album for Take A Worm For A Walk Week,
This album is *calmer* than the first one but the vocals are much expressive and the composition work awesome.
Big up to Snuffleupagus and its terrific videoclip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEsBROWGPYA and a crazy break at 0:38.
I really love the power of the vocals at 0:18 in BruckBrackers.
This one of their à la Converge song : Air Tight : Awesome.
The part at 0:44 in Slime Gag is a killer.
You’ll love their Devo cover : Whip It

(2007, Undergroove Records) Scotland, Glasgow.
I discover that band with that album in a promo stand at Furet Du Nord in Lille.
I directly loved the song Domestic Abuse with its unsane rhythmic and its crzay vocals : genius.
Take A Worm For A Walk Week have too crazy guitar riffs like : Chacka.
One of my favorite song is Chat Chavage, à la Converge, with amazing riffs.
The part at 0:29 in Lumber Puncture is terrific.
You’ll notice the amazing artwork, in my Top 10.

Split 7″ With Desalvo
(2007, Midmarch Records) Scotland, Glasgow.
Take A Worm For A Walk Week is an amazing quatuor from glasgow, kind of Converge, boosted.
They deliver a really powerful music, and fine at the same time.
The rhythmic parts are originals and the vocal possessed : Perfect.
I bought that Ep, right after their first album, the artwork rocks.
You’ll find Side Effects from the first album : a well-done build-up and 25 Seconds Of Positive with a really dense and complex drum pattern.
Great.

Two Kings Of The Same Kingdom
(2007, SAF Records) USA, Florida.
Second Yip-Yip’s album and better sound, since the first track : Anarchist Clog.
The synthesizers in Club Mummy are sublime.
Then I really love the way that Jazz Rats evolves and its finale at 1:24.
The break at 0:55 in Sprinkle Council is terrific and the sequential synthesizers at the end is a killer.
That time, High Heel to Mammal IV is close to the version from “Pro-Twelve Thinker”.
We want more.

In The Reptile House
(2006, SAF Records) USA, Florida.
I discover the name Yip-Yip, some years ago , on a The Locust tour flyer.
You have to listen their music, just to respect the awesome work they did on their costumes.
So they play a lofi electro music, 8bit, maybe 1bit.
The Yip-Yip are synthesizers maniac/masters, the list of the one they used for this record is impressive.
Sometimes, you’ll have a funny electronic saxophone solo like in Candy Dinner.
I love the beat and the riff of Double Dolphin and the slow part at 0:26.
I really like too the hiphop break at 1:03 in Birth Herd.
The part at 1:10 in Munch Much Mush ? sounds disco-tech.
High Heel To Mammal III is a recursive song in their albums, It’s funny to listen to the way they gonna redo it. Here it’s really out of structure.
An amazing and original album.

Hey Everyone !
(2008, Best Before Records) Scotland.
I discovered that band with my Scotland’s correspondent Laura Wood, indie music specialist haha.
I miss their live in Paris and I regret it.
That band plays music in between The Blood Brothers (One Chance) and Rumble In Rhodos (like Hey James)
Their guitar parts are really melodic (1993), the sound is clear and there is two drummers.
I directly liked Pink Sabbath and its terrific part at 1:43 and its wonderfull guitars overdub.
I really love the weird and experimental break at 2:15 in Some Dresses.
A very good record !

The Many Faces Of Mental Illness
(2001, Three One G) USA, California.
Review of a compilation of an amazing band : The Festival Of Dead Deer.
I always was fascinated by their music : theirs songs are original and Grand.
After the fast Episodes, my favorite song is My Names Explicit and its terrific part at 4:06.
The Festival Of Dead Deer brings a high level of quality in noise music : it’s only dissonance, scary chords and feedback noise (like at 1:19 in Festival Of Dead Deer), but it creates too interesting ambiances and melodies in a way.
The vocals at 0:55 in Monotones are scary and moving at the same time.
The bass guitar is in front in the mix and its sound is great (like in Festival Of Dead Deer intro or its awesome finale at 2:25)
I really love the drum pattern at 0:35 in Inner Planetary Reasoning.
This album is mythic ! I couldn’t find any song in streaming, only this live will be a teaser for you : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqcwyUnN7Mo

Retox 7″
(2011, Three One G) USA, California.
I just receiver my Retox 7″, new band with Justin and Gabe from The Locust.
In retox, there are too Mike Crain (from the awesome Festival Of Dead Deer, reviewed soon) and Thor Didsay.
What a wonderful picture disc ! I never saw an Ep like that : http://threeoneg.com/31G/wp-content/uploads/SL7400281-600×372.jpg
I started to like Retox with the song I Rub The Wrong Way. I love the way that MXR’s Carbo copy delays are used, and the cow falling videoclip totally matches with the music : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANFqKte5qm8
The rhythmic part in Ready To Spit is unsane.
I love the part at 0:51 in Put Some Hair On It.
I really like to the slidy guitar riff in Rusty Sheriff’s Badge.
I really appreciate too the declaimed and powerful vocals in Piss Elegant.
Great EP, I can’t wait for their first LP.

I just saw Knut live at La Maroquinerie in Paris the 25th of October 2010 and this is an idea of what it is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8UTGSSbtKQ
The part at 7:07 in Calamity is a mayhem in live.
It really impressed me : What A Power ! What A Drummer !
Leet is amazingly complex.
The sound and mix are awesome and really dynamic like in Damned Extroverts.
I really love their weird chords in Suckers and their taping parts in Lemmings.
A really good comeback after a 5 years break.

Challenger

I discovered Knut in 2003 on their live video @Furyfest of d’El Nino.
I was really impressed by the part at 1:31 and their really complex rhythms at the beginning and the end of the song.
I didn’t know the title of that songs and years after years I bought all their albums one by one. “Challenger” was the last I bought haha.
I think that”Challenger” is their album with the best sound : really clear, wide and powerful. You’ll get this idea since Whacked Out.
In Repressed, I like this feeling of being on a boat and going up down because of the waves, you’ll feel that strongly in a human sea (in live).
Ice Will is brutal.
Then Bite The Bullet is one of their hypnotic song.
A Must Have.

That Ep is the first Knut’s CD I bought, and I was fascinated by their sound and this à la Botch touch.
I really love Dissolve and this idea of complexification of a rhythmic pattern.
I listen a lot that Ep when I was younger in my car, and I love the bass and power effect of the songs (like in You Deserve Me).
In The Will To Please, you’ll find one of their hypnotic sludge-core song really interesting.
I tired for a while to get the chords of Aim At The Sun haha.

First album for Knut and what a hit !
They a very unique music with their own touch : A skilled mix of sludge and hardcore.
It reminds me of band like Botch or Amen Ra, but much powerful
Engine is a really loud and slow song and I love the build-up at 1:37.
The riffs in The Whip and High-Low are terrific.
The break at 0:35 in Wiped Out rocks
Then you’ll notice Crouch which is really heavy and looped : hypnotic.
A very good album

Alienated
(2006, CMF) Sweden.
What a hit !
I listened to that band last weekend in London in the All Ages Records shop and I directly fall in love with their music.
The Vicious sounds like a mix of Dean Dirg, The Hive or sometimes Pixies (?)
This sweden quatuor releases a well-produced and mixed album, very melodic, with original vocals.
After the first slap Alienated you could love the minor chords of Walking Dead.
Given Up chorus is genius “I’ve given up, I’ve given up on you”.
Bass parts really groove like in Sanity.
Finally I love “Cause everything they say it’s all a liiiiiiiie” Lie.
all the songs remain in head and it’s a success
My favorite punk album that year.
