Arctic Monkey

Suck It and See

(2011, Domino) UK

After a more cerebral 3rd album where they slightly lost themselve in their quest for originality, the band recorded a happier, more spontanious and more revival new one.No more “so british” indie dancy punk, no more sweet balad, no more acne. The Arctic Monkeys are retro and it smells the burnt fuzz, the hippies, the stoners, the yéyés and even the roadtrips in the countryside.
Opening for Queens of the Stone Age apparently changed the band. You can even find Josh Homme singing on All My Own Stunts.
Produced by James Ford again, Suck It and See doesn’t bring anything new but is still a really cool album to listen to !

At The Drive-In

Relationship Of Command

(2000, Fearless Records) USA, Texas.

This review is for Valentine. I’m sure her father will play good music to her.

At The Drive-in is a post-hardcore band really original and famous (until Guitar Heroe ha ha !)

The power of that band comes from the duo Cédric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodrigues-Lopez, singer and guitarist.

After a weird intro, What a powerful and crazy appetizer with Arcarsenal.

One Armed Scissor is the single in this album, with a great chorus which reminds in head and a great vocal performance.

I love the little guitar’s melodies along the song in Pattern Against User.

The part at 2:35 in Sleepwalk Capsules is terrific.

Already a classic.

Dark Dark Dark

Wild Go

(2010, Supply And Demand Music) USA, Minneapolis.

I discovered Dark Dark Dark with Spotify.

It an amazing band that I recommand to every Regina Spektor or PJ Harvey or Alec K. Redfearn fan (particullary in In Your Dream).

This music is about the terrific voice of Nona Marie Invie with piano and a small orchestra.

My favorite song is Daydreaming and it’s genius modulation on “And oh if you knew what it meant to me”.

I really love the part at 1:26 in Wild Go.

The production in Say The Word are Grand too (and I love the part at 0:50).

A Must Have !

Bright Bright Bright

(2010, Supply And Demand Music) USA, Minneapolis.

That Ep was attached to the “Wild Go” Digipack I bought.

In opposition to its name, “Bright Bright Bright” is darker than “Wild Go” and particullary in Bright Bright Bright and Something For Myself.

I love in these two songs how an amazing ambiance is built since the first piano solo chords.

Flood is a little bit different, more rhythmic and happy.

Grand Finale with Wild Goose Chase : score perfect.

Excellent.

Boom Bip

Blue Eyed In The Red Room

(2005, Lex Records) USA, California.

This is the typical album I bought only for one song.

Do’s & Don’ts is a great song that I discovered on an Anticon & friends compilation by Romain Dumoulin.

The vocals and harmonies by Gruff Rhys are grand and really moving, as well as the great production by Boom Bip.

The instrumental part at 4:30 is amazing too.

The other songs are instrumentals and too soft for me.

One Day As A Lion

One Day As A Lion Ep

(2008, Anti Records) USA, California.

Formed around Zack de la Rocha (ex Rage Against the Machine) and Jon Theodore (1st drummer of Mars Volta),

One Day as a Lion is a tribal mixture of catchy beats, hypnotic riffs and wild flow.

The production is simple but efficient ! Fat and roomy drums sound, dirty Rhodes, vintage synthesizers and analog insanity.

Wild International directly catch the attention with its wicked 3 notes groove. (Congrats to the Frenchy who roughly introduce the song from the 3rd second).

I also really like the song One Day As A Lion and its enormous ending.

We want more !

Zeus!

Opera

(2013, 31G Records) Italie.

Zeus - Opera

Yes a new Zeus album ! and released on 31G, classy !

What to say on that album ? More energy and more great ideas !

I love to death the part at 2:40 in Giorgio Gaslini Is Our Tom Araya.

On notera au passage le feat. chant de Justin Pearson des The Locust / Retox sur la terrible Sick And Destroy.

Bach To The Future’s guitar’s riffs are absolutely terrific ! (What a speed at 3:26)

Set Panzer To Rock is scary at 2:04.

Another Must-Have-In-Your-Collection !

Zeus!

(2011, Offset Records) Italia.

Zeus! is my favorite punk/noisy discovery of 2011.

That instrumental bass/drum duo offers us a very catchy, fast, melodic music with many sides.

More : the amazing quality of the mix and production (master by the surgeon : Alan Douches)

After a first appetizer with SuckerTorte my first hit was the terrific GrindMaster Flesh (ha ha!) and its beautiful videoclip here : http://vimeo.com/23740024

Turbo Pascal is a killer, what a bass sound ! what a build-up ! the slow down part like at 1:41 are amazing.

I love the part at 2:12 in Cowboia and its grand Finale.

Koprofiev riffs are unsane.

Rainbow Arabia

Boys And Diamond

(2011, Kompakt Records) USA, California.

I discovered Rainbow Arabia through Noisemag (http://www.noisemag.net/)

First of all, I  loved the vocals harmonies in Hai and its huge electro production. The part at 1:44 is terrific and fine at the same time about the soundscapes.

Then I love Boys And Diamonds : well-done and well-produced too (I like the little guitar riff along the song).

I love too the synthesizer at 1:35.

Finally I like Jungle Bear mainly for its production.

I only remember these three songs.

The Basta Ep

(2008, Manimal Vinyl Records) USA, California.

Rainbow Arabia is a couple who offers us an electro/afrobeat musique in between The Knife, M.I.A., this kind of band…

You’ll find dancing guitare+drumbox+synthe songs like Let Them Dance.

I love the bass in I Know I See I Love I Go and the way that the vocals are mixed with it, and the Finale with the guitar part.

Finally Hear No Sea No is a success as a melancholic song.

Sometimes the mix guitar + drumbox reminds me of Béruriers Noirs.

A very good Ep !

Fight Paris

Paradise, Found

(2005, Trustkill Records) USA, Atlanta.

Only album for Fight Paris, Hardcore’n'roll band.

The single of that album is Fuck Me Stilettos, with a great production : very powerful.

Their lyrics are mainly egotrip.

A second song really rocks You Gotta Stop And Smell The Roses and its really loud part at 0:40.

Destroyer reminds me of their big brother Everytime I Die.

Their guitar in Better Than Elvis sounds sometimes like Destiny.

I love the part at  2:26 in Deville.

A good record.

Anorak

Sick

(2011, Swarm Of Nails, Maximum Douglas Records) France.

New album for Anorak and what a hit !

The artwork is really beautiful (still made by Mamzelle Mamath).

Ils ont ajouté le raffinement à la grosse production cette fois et ce dès l’entrée en matière avec l’énorme Long Black Half Hair et ses intéressants effets de delay et son final qui reste en tête.

Cover With Mud is my favorite song as for its riffs, as for its rhythmic session, as for the sound aesthetic. That song is kind of a compilation of their best ideas over the years.

Then come the Wood Philosophy, à la Converge and its terrific Finale.

I love the part at 1:35 in The Mirror Building which reminds me of Nile sometimes.

I really love the guitar/bass harmonies at 2:32 in Guru.

My Own Haze

(2009, DIY) France.

First Anorak’s album and the level is really high.

You can’t help but being amazed by  first, the quality of the artwork (much better printed than on a computer screen)

Second : the amazing sound : The band has now a real production, which flatters the “wall of sound” that the band offers us live. You can see that with my favorite song Kids Of God (from the second Ep) with now a massive sound and its crazy Finale.

They increase too their composition skills and create now moving ambiances (My Own Haze)

I love a lot …Some Skirts and its amazing part at 0:53.

The taping riffs at 1:55 in Legs Feel Heavy are classy and the part at 3:49 is well done (reminds me of The Number Twelve Looks Like You).

Little Sweep is the last song : the top of the pyramid.

Faces Of Cruel Kids On Rotten Walls

(2007, DIY) France.

Second Anorak’s Demo : a hardcore’n'roll quatuor from Amiens. We played several time with them with my band H.O.Z.

I remember being really impressed by the intense blast beats, the changing guitar’s riffs, the powerful vocals and the massive bass sound.

From the six songs of that Ep, I’ll only remember of Kids Of God which I’ll review only the second version on “My Own Haze” with a much better production.

I still love Cruel Love too, its intro is terrific and that is a kill live.

Let’s start the story of Anorak.

Clotaire 1er

Galactic Yo Yo Yo

(2011, La Mangouste Records) France.

I discover Clotaire 1er through his label.

Here is a good surprize in the dubstep/breakbeat/core scene.

The track Leçon De Chose will definitely convince you (the part at 0:23 is sick).

Then I love Ce Kick Est Un Leurre : really experimental and I like this mix in between violins riffs and a la venetian snares break beats (you can’t help but notice the part at 1:48 : mayhem).

I like too the part at 1:21with the french samples in Drunkcore Addicted.

You’ll like the fast vocals of Dundee Apocalypse Clash and its amazing part at 1:27 and the best part from the ep at 2:25.

Really good work : I can’t wait for a physical release.
