Black Elk

Always A Six, Never A Nine

(2008, Crucial Blast Records) USA, Portland.

I discovered Black Elk, because we were offered to play with them in Lille but it didn’t happen.

What a hit ! That band offers us a music in between Akimbo, The Jesus Lizard or Haust (Old My Head is really in the middle of all these bands).

Hospital is the single, which beautiful guitar harmonies and terrific vocal performance (at 2:23).

The guitar effects are great in Stab and reminds me of Mastodon sometimes.

The part at 2:27 in My Last Shred Of Decency is awesome.

Really like too the taping part at 2:00 in Pig Crazy.

I can’t wait for a new release.

A must have dans ta collec.

Dads

Brush Your Teeth ;)

(2011, DIY) USA, New Jersey.

What a good surprize :

Dads is a  math rock / emo band from New Jersey.

Their music is a kind of mix in between Tera Melos and Born Ruffians.

This Ep is released on Tape :)

I really love the chords played in Dan’s Christopher Walken Impersonation and the vocals flow in I Don’t Wanna Fuck With Another Dude’s Snacks.

I Didn’t Say Pass Me The Ball is the fastest song of the Ep and it’s really catchy.

Very good, can’t wait for the full length !

Sharitah Manush

Green Horses

(2011, DIY) France, Bordeaux.

Another Discovery by Babylone Promotion, a psychedelic band with sitars from Bordeau : Sharitah Manush and here one of its vintage videoclip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S_ZR_VuuQ0

I’m not really into that kind of music but the psyche effects on keyboard and guitars are really interesting (particulary at the end of Shining Star)

The Artwork is a success too and the translucide green vinyl is really beautiful.

The Ep is well produced and the sound really great.

The Crane Angels

Virgin/The World Ep

(2011, Animal Factory) France, Bordeaux.

This is The Crane Angels : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTbwNNWxt9I

I discover that band with Julien Deverre, and because Botibol (reviewed some weekd ago http://www.radiatorhymn.com/?p=1778) is a member of that band.

So we have here a mix of folk/rock band with a choir.

I really liked the artwork : a beautiful silkscreen print with golden touches.

In the two songs I prefered The World, more rock and with interesting vocals effects, which remind me of Providence’s Fang Island.

Good.

Himuro Yoshiteru

Where Does Sound Come From ?

(2010, Murder Channel) Japan

This album is for me, the big discovery 2011.

Thanks to my colleague Narjès for sending me a link to Himuro’s amazing music.

The first slap was the first song : The Adventure On My Desktop. That song proves that he’s really skilled in producing and mixing. The rhythm is really catchy and the saturation + glitch effects are Grand.

ABout synthesizers, some reminds me of Chris Clark’s universe. Great.

Is Resistance Futile? makes me think of my favorite Autechre’s song 61e.CR with this really complex rhythmic.

Bold Lines is really harsh and powerful song : bravo.

I love the vocal part at 3:30 in Start It.

Finally We, Mess-Age is the experimental song and the top of Himuro’s pyramid.

A Must Have.

Welcome Myself

(2007, Tangram Disk) Japan

5th album for Himuro Yoshiteru, japanese electro artist since 1997.

You can’t really see it on your right but the artwork is amazing, with silvery ink graphics on black background.

Himuro offers me that album, thank you.

I really liked Popular Science : In deed I like this kind of childish riffs which grows in complexity and dissonances and glitches.

When I read the title Insects In My Head I could almost guess what I’ll listen to : it’s one of my favorite song.

Hopeless Monsters reminds me of the early Squarepusher releases and that’s great !

Run Faster is a video games-like song, what a nostalgia feeling for me, old game gear addict.

A very good record.

Cast Spells

Bright Works and Baton

(2010, Sargent House) USA, Illinois

Cast Spells is a folk band very interesting, which I discovered on the internet on their label’s website : Sargent House (Tera Melos, Fang Island, Zach Hill…).
Dave Davison’s voice qualifies the most that band.
Glamorous Glowing is this Ep’s single. The instrumentation is awesome and the riffs stuck in head.
This is true too for Pionner Scalps or War Story Hellos, which remind me Hugh Coltman’s music.
Cast Spells love bells : some are in Glamorous Glowing but in Potted Plant too with a very good production.

The Ep finishes with A Badge, a moving anthem : It’s hard to resist to sing with Dave in unison !

A successful Ep, I can’t wait for the full length !

Cast Spells / Good Old War Split

(2009, Sargent House) USA, Illinois

Cast Spells - Good Old War Split

First Ep for Cast Spells.

I’m repeating myself but Dave Davison voice is really impressive and moving.
The Chorus in All Brass is beautiful and its Finale Grand.
Letters is much more calm and I like a lot the guitar riff.
I didn’t know Good Old War before but it’s well done, mainly with their vocals harmonies (Texas Blues).
I love too Breaking Down from 0:48.
A good split cd.

The Blood Brothers

Young Machetes

(2006, V2 Records) USA, Seattle

That album reminds me of a gig we did with my band H.O.Z. in France, in La Creuse, and in between the bands, the “DJ” played Nausea Shreds Yr Head. That song remained in my mind for a while and I had to listen to their discography to find the name of that amazing song.

“Young Machetes” is their last album :( and I regret that I never saw them live. From their videos you can see how terrific their presence was : (here in Set The Fire To The Face Of Fire) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA9ruPqj930

Finally Giant Swan is an impressive vocale performance and I love the break at 3:09, very powerful.

Rat Rider got a weird drum riff and I’m amazed to see how they set the guitar and bass part over a so complex rhythm.

The break at 0:25 in Johnny Ripper is genius.

I just precise that the artwork is really cool.

A Must-have-in-your-collection-if-you-want-the-same-as-mine.

R.I.P. The Blood Brothers.

Crimes

(2004, V2 Records) USA, Seattle

This is one of the lightest album by The Blood Brothers.

Live At The Apocalypse Cabaret with its piano intro is one of my favorites songs. The vocals here reminds me of their side project Neon Blonde : it’s beautiful.

Rats And Rats And Rats For Candy and Wolf Party Finale are really strong.

Love Rymes With Hideous Car Wreck is one of the single in that record, it’s well built but a little bit too soft for me.

The part at 0:52 in Beautiful Horses is spathic.

Globally the production in this album is supressed.

Another Must-Have.

…Burn, Piano Island, Burn

(2003, Artist Direct Records) USA, Seattle

I discover the band with that album and this videoclip for Ambulance Vs. Ambulance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmdMNVyupMQ

Fucking’ Greatest Hits is the perfect intro for this huge sound’s album produced by Ross Robinson.

Burn , Piano Island, Burn is really wild, as for the vocals as for the guitar parts.

The bass effect at the beginning of Cecilia And The Silhouette Saloon is genius.
The part at 0:56 in Six Nightmares At The Pinball Masquerade is very powerful : a standard.
It’s really interesting that the band plays a music very agressive and at the same time, rock’n'roll and accessible in a way, if you can deal with their vocals (for a NITHM : Non-Initiated-To-Hardcore-Music ha ha)
This album is well done, there is no songs to throw in the trash.
A-Must-Have-Or-You-Don’t-Have-It.

March On Electric Children

(2002, Three One G) USA, Seattle

Second album for The Blood Brothers and released on…31G, All the best come from the same place ;)

The Blood Brothers is a hardcore band from Seattle, and one of the few who released on a major (Virgin). Some DIY fans won’t like it, but I think even after signing with V2, they kept their crazy singing and wildness.

The Blood Brothers is too the amazing voice of Johnny Whitney who is able to jump from a clean voice to high pitched screams with maestro.

It’s really surprising that they found the recipes of their sound and success in their early records. Birth Skin / Death Leather could have been on a later record for example.

The pingpong game in between their vocals parts in Siamese Gun is genius.

Kiss The Octopus is another example of how they rock complex rhythmics.

Finally, I really liked American Vulture, piano/vocals song, really funny and well-done.

A Must-Have.
