Hospital Bomber
(2010, Twelve Gauge Records) USA, California
Last Ep by HHLL, still in the good hands of Sam, the band keep going in the ”Turtle Nipple And The Toxic Shock” direction : more punk, noise and experimental.
The part at 0:44 in Customary Impurity is genius.
The vocals at 0:50 in We Incompetent Sperm are really surprizing and impressive.
I only regret one thing : that Ep is too short.

Turtle Nipple And The Toxic Shock
(2008, Ferret Music) USA, California
My favorite HHLL’s album.
Robert Smith already proved that he was a grand hardcore singer, but now he reaches a higher level (Giant Mantis vs TURT Nip).
It’s hard to describe this album song by song, because this album is really coherent, each song contain the elements of HHLL’s success : heavy mosh parts, rock’n'roll (H.D.EYE Hybrid Cyborg) and scary vocals.
Sam Pura did a great job, in bringing them far from their early metal sound to a much more punk and noise sound. That’s great.
There is many guitar effects, well done and non-repetitive.
I love the part at 1:07 in 3000, 100 Points, 100pts, Gummy Octopi and its terrific Finale.

(2007, Ferret Music) USA, California
Production made by Sam Pura. Classy.
I don’t say that only because he mixed my album “Loud Noise Making” with H.O.Z. haha.
Have a look too that great videoclip : Inhalent Abuse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U8uTmxDTxQ
In that same rock’n'roll vein you’ll like Tell Shannon Her Crafts Are Ready.
Pizza Party and Tragic Tragic Track Jacket are many proofs that HHLL are the kings of the heavy mosh parts.

I discovered that band with this album.
I remember that it was a real slap compared to all the other metalcore band at that time. These guys are gone haha.
First thing amazing : their terrific vocals : real screaming performance, either in the articulation or in their flow (i love the first 50 seconds of Party Girl)
At 1:00 in Eating The Porridge And Killing The Bears, It’s the end of the world, and it’s well done.
Guitar riffs and Rhythm are really well done.
They are too the kings of mosh part (at 0:55 in Texas Chainsaw Mascer-Uh) and rock’n'roll (Mall-Nutrition at 1:13).
Kids, Kids, Kids is genius.
A Must-Have.

INRI (Ep)
(2006, Artfag) USA, California
Last Ep for The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower.
That Ep is really surprizing because it is much more slow and rock than “Love In The Fascist Brothel”.
Anyway the two songs INRI and Boys Keep Swinging are really well composed and recorded.
Boys Keep Swinging has a nice rock’n'roll touch, and the choirs are great.
Honorable mention goes to INRI’s remix by Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Nick Zinner (in Head Wound City too).
Good job.

Love In The Fascist Brothel

Karl (Six Feet Over / Mediocratie / Tol Eressëa) introduced me to that band with this album.
In deed Karl introduced me to many major band through is cardboard CD box with 31g treasures and other good stuffs.
I think that without him, I would have listen to Dave only all live long.
“Love In The Fascist Brothel” is an Grand punk album.
With all the provocation which goes with ha ha. I really like this powerful live video for the song Reichstag Rock : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cOFyVhnyM1A
The part at 1:15 in Exile On Vein Street is simply terrific.
Love In The Sex Prison is genius.
I love the guitar effects on Drake The Fake.
I can’t stop singing : “What color are his eyes ? Yellow like leather banana, I heard he’s tall ? I got to jump up to spit in his face”
Finally Lawnmower Love is the most brutal, lofi and rock’n'roll song of the album.
“Love In The Fascist Brothel” is a Must-Have-Or-Never-Talk-Music-With-Me-Ever ha ha.

If You Cut Us, We Bleed (Ep)
(2004, Happy Couples Never Last) USA, California
That Ep is really interesting because in between their softest album “Dissertation Honey” and their punkest album “Love In The Fascist Brothel”, which points to a more punchy style.
You can see this clearly in For Francis, a very powerful and fast song.
If You Cut Us, We Bleed shows a typical element of their music : the way that they alternate very fast rich and complex chords.
Green Cars is the softest track of that Ep, I really love its Finale.
Again, really good !

The Plot To blow Up The Eiffel Tower is a noise/rock band from San Diego totally unique.
All of them are skilled and talented musicians, with a really good production/sound engineer since their first album.
They’re known too for their provocatives live shows.
Johnny, You’re All Grown Up, Comeback 1968 or Circuit are typicals TPTBUTET songs, with that amazing energy and harmony sense.
For Marcus is a moving song with a really surprizing funky break at 1:02.
The chorus in Sometimes I Wish I’d Lost A Leg reminds in mind with still their noise touch (Either with the guitar effects, or with the Brass).
I only regret one thing : I never saw them live.

8th album by Dan Smith and once again the quality is here.
The Guitar riff in These Hands Weren’t Meant For Us is amazing and the build-up is a success. The same for the accordion part at 3:50.
Falling In Love With Glaciers is a brilliant build-up too.
In deed, I really enjoy the way that the guitar sound, the vocal performance and the build-up in all of his songs like in Seatbelt Hands or Failing Is Not Just Failure.
A very good album.

Return To Struggleville

I discovered Dan The Listener with his awesome featuring in The Chariot’s David De La Hoz.
Dan Smith is a spoken word performer, much more “screamed words”, or talk music as he defines it.
His live shows are spathic and terrific, and moving. He reaches many times climaxes and he seems out of breath, or in a state of trance, which is really strong.
Ozark Empire, Or A Snake Oil Salesman Comes To Your Town is an amazing song, kind of hiphop, with this good idea of a looped shooting sample : well done.
Death By Shotgun (what a transition I’ve done haha) and its bottleneck guitar riff is great too.
In I Have Nothing, But Attention, I Scream, Dan “sings” a little bit more and that kind of vocals is interesting on that song.
A good album !

My Friend Nicolas Sanizzle introduced me to the amazing Kid Sister.
I could sum up her music in two great words :
Great sound, great flow.
Melisa has a really impressive and fast flow à la Missy Elliott (like in Step). Productions by XXXchange and A-Trak are awesome, with an electro touch, and reach really low subs levels (like Switch Board).
Big’n'Bad and Get Fresh really worth it and the riffs remain in mind (with a little Eurodance touch).
I like the part at 1:44 in Life On Tv.
A great album.

Here Lies The Body Of Jaks
(1993-1995, Three One G) USA, Portland (?)

Jaks is not very well-known and it’s not fair.
“Here Lies The Body Of Jaks” is a compilation of their album and some 7″ mixed by the great Steve Albini.
Jaks is hard to define, but you could compare it to recents The Plot To Blow Eiffel Power or Antioch Arrow.
You’ll find this very powerful and noisy rock with the terrific vocal performance of Katrina Ford (like at 1:30 in Damn Bloodsuckers).
The bass guitar is placed in front in the mix and the riffs are really well done : I love the guitar+bass part at 1:17 in Del Chimney’s.
The drum riff (+cowbell) is really groovy in Spider and Bombpop and its guitar’s harmonics.
Coup de Coeur to Fidgecake Pismire and its finale.
A Must-have.

Late Leo Tardin’s album and once again a very good one.
I saw Roulette live before this cd released and that song obsessed me. I really love the research with the synthesizers and with Karsh Kale playing Tablas in the song Sleepwalk too.
You will probably love Clairvoyance which sounds like a movie soundtrack, and I love the drum riff at 1:19.
Revolver is a kind of electro song, a little apart of the others, totally funny and I can’t get bored of it.
Infidel is a very interesting build-up.
Mike Ladd offers us a great vocal performance in Domestic Bliss.
Can’t wait for the next one.

I always am a great fan of synthesizers and Grand Pianoramax feeds my hunger.
Leo Tardin evolve in a jazz/progressive rock style very interesting.
Ride I, The Race is a song which really rocks live, with powerfull drum breaks.
Mike Ladd’s performance in Showdown is really classy too.
Coup de coeur with The Hook and Spleen’s featuring that I love.
It’s amazing to see Leo play the piano riff of Ride I, The Race in Ride II, Driftin’ with a synthesizer.

I discovered So Cow in Alex Melis’ Top 10 2010.
That rock band is terrific.
I don’t know if his music is a rock revolution, but Brian Kelly is a composition genius.
You’ll never get bored along “Meaningless Friendly”.
Limboat or International Waters are examples of his constantly changing melodies which is great.
So Cow is too very catchy chorus like in Dunno, wonderful soli (like in Girl Racer) or Lofi Drumbox songs like Shut Eye.

First album with an amazing artwork for Brian Kelly, amazing Irish artist.
The big hit of this album is Casablanca which remains in mind for hours. Let’s have a look to this great live video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3yVZLPLSN8
Then I love Halcyon Days for its great melody.

Head Wound City
(2005, Three One G) USA, California
Head Wound City is a superband with Justin Pearson (Basse) and Gabe Serbian (Drum) from The Locust, Jordan Billie (Vocals) and Cody Votolato (Guitar) from The Blood Brothers and finally Nick Zinner (Lead Guitar) from Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who released this self-titled album.
Only knowing this member list will tease you, but adding to this they did what was impossible : creating a 7 tracks, with a total length under 10 minuts, totaly new, original and essential.
So, It’s a kind of Noise / Rock / Hardcore totally spathic.
Jordan’s vocals are terrific (like in I’m A Taxidermist, I’ll Stuff Everything)
I love the spathic and crazy rhythms that Gabe plays (as ever ha ha) and particullary in New Soak For An Empty Pocket and Trash Zoo.
Cody’s noisy ambiances mixed with Nick lead guitar are classy, like in Prick Class and Street College.

I discovered Botibol through that amazing live video of his song Arudy : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SARxCK5ZdKU
So he just released his first album : very impressive.
First of all, the production is grand and you’ll find many musical influences in his soundscapes which will please indie rock or pop lover.
Arudy reminds me of Arcade Fire. Oh Son sounds in a way like some songs of Hugh Coltman.
We Were Foxes is a success and the very beginning is à la Biffy Clyro.
Finally Through The Mountains makes me think to Cold War Kids, so let’s stop all this comparison, I will conclude by the fact that botibol is a crossing of many pop/rock bands that I like.
He got a terrific voice, kind of Jeff Buckley, and he’s skilled in harmonies.
A Small Light In The Dark got a little dark touch and that’s great too.
A great record and I hope many more soon.

Worse Than Alone
(2009, Eyeball Records) USA, New Jersey
Last Album for the awesome The Number Twelve Looks Like You…
Unfortunately the band had broken up.
That album is, as “Mongrel”, very well produced, more brutal and heavy, you can feel that with the first song Glory Kingdom.
It was difficult to release a new album after the amazing “Mongrel” and first time I listened to “Worse Than Alone” I had mixed feelings.
But with the time I discovered many good songs.
The mosh part at the end of To Catch A Tiger is loud.
I love Retort, Rebuild, Remind and its part at 2:20 and I like too the part at 6:50 in I’ll Make My Own Hours.

You shouldn’t underestimate what is The Number Twelve Looks Like You live. I saw them in 2009 at the awesome Ieperfest (http://www.ieperfest.com) in belgium and it was a slap in my face : the drummer, guitar player, bass player and singer are monsters and amazingly skilled !

Grandfather, as a proof, is the single : Let’s look to their brilliant videoclip here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2jD-Cnlzwk
That song has a great rhythmic and melodic complexity, with many variations and in a way opened.

I really love the part at 1:54 in El Pinata De La Muerte.

There is many good songs. I like the guitar clean sound touch like in Texas Dolly or The Devil’s Dick Disaster.

The Number Twelve Looks Like You is an exceptional mathcore band from New Jersey.
All of the members are really skilled with their instruments.
Their songs are elaborate, brutal and opened at the same time.
I just bought that album recently and of course, for a first album, the sound and production is less fine than their late records.
That one is really hardcore and free, it reminds me of See You Next Tuesday or Bobby Bray’s screams (like in Bambi The Hooker And A Case Of Beer)

Interesting.
