Grumpf Quartet
(2010, DIY) FR
I discovered the french Grumpf Quartet on http://www.metalorgie.com/metal
I was very surprised to find another band à la Diatrib(a), they are rare and this music style is so interesting.
So here is a trio with a very powerful and interesting sound (Shaka)
There are complex structures and harmonies, everything you’re waiting for.
La Triste Fin D’Horace reminds me of Rolo Tomassi in a way.
This instrumental band rules its interesting ambiances.
Don’t miss them.

Nostril
(2010, Ad Noiseam) FR
Here is the brand new album by Igorrr “Nostril”.
This album is a real slap : This mix of electro, break beat, classical and grindcore is really original and well produced.
Moldy Eye mays remind you of Bela Bartok’s remix by Venetian Snares and the part at 3:39 is amazing.
Break parts in Tendon are terrific and the finale with sampled vocals very funny.
I love too the shutter break at 1:58 in Excessive Funeral.
Half Pony and Double Monk display a wide variety of samples and soundscapes (mongol throat whistling ?) and interesting.
This album is great.

Tomorrow, In A Year
(2010, Rabid Records) Sweden
This is their late album with Mt. Sim, Planningtorock and mezzo-soprano Kristina Wahlin.
This is their most experimental album, far from the pop side of their first releases.
This double album has a really classy artwork.
In my opinion, the best song is Variation Of Birds which is original, fascinating and beautiful.
I like the idea that a so disturbing noise can be a basis for a beautiful vocal harmony.
It’s a very weird and wonderful ambiance.
The Height Of Summer is the song which sounds the most like the oldest releases.
I really like too Geology and Letter To Henslow for the wide soundscapes they provide.
I would love to have some others songs à la Variation Of Birds haha.

This third album is one step more in the quality of production and research of interesting sounds.
like Like A Pen : the rhythmic and spacialization work made with the water droplets is awesome, much more fine than their very first à la Reason productions.
Karin’s vocals are really amazing on that song.
I love too the weir harmonies in We Share Our Mothers’ Health or in Marble House.
By the way, I think I loved much the raw side of their debut, maybe a little bit more powerful.

Deep Cuts
(2003, Rabid Records) Sweden
“Deep Cuts” is the first album of the Knife that I discovered thanks to Olivier, my bassist’s brother. I listened to it around its release, I was very young at this time.
I was first interested by this mix of pop synthesizers and weird vocals.
One For One is my favorite song by The Knife. This ghost synthe and female vocals build an awesome ambiance.
Heartbeats is huge too, in another style, which reminds me of the french Rita Mitsouko.
They got a great knowledge of synthesizers and effects on voices (like in You Take My Breath Away).
Finally you’ll find totally crazy songs like Is This Medicine ? or Listen Now.
To conclude, this album of The Knife is for me the best and A Must Have.

The Knife
(2001, Rabid Records) Sweden

The Knife is a swedish electro pop duo with siblings. (Karin plays too in another band named Fever Ray).
Their songs are often made of a synthesizer line with female mainly or male vocals with effects.
This band is really original and identifiable, Lasagna is one of the songs which sounds like The Knife.
I bought this album very recently.
Reindeer is for me the second best song of The Knife ever.
The melody progression and the vocals are awesome and I love this snare à la Reason-Scream4.
You have too some songs with oriental touch : Kino ou I Just Had To Die.
I read their two first album were depreciated by the reviews, but for me, they are the two best.

Chrome Panthers
(2005, Troubleman Unlimited) USA, NY
Last album for Ex Models.
I really like the way their music evolve from a rocky Nowave at their beginnings to a very experimental and noisy music for “Chrome Panthers”.
The rhythm in That’s Funny I Don’t Feel Like A Shithead is hypnotic and the vocals are, as always, terrific.
Buy American has a tough intro but from 2:52, it starts to be really interesting.
I love too Chrome Hearts, a nice way to end the story of Ex Models.

What Is A Price is totally awesome, I love their idea Fuck To The Music in doing that groovy song and its grindcore finale.
Shahin ‘s vocals and the drums are powerful and the bass riffs are absolutely groovy.
Rip This Joint, Pink Noise and Brand New Panties are all funny and real noisy and vocal performances.

First album for Ex Models, Nowave trio from Brooklyn.
It’s probably the most accessible from their discography, but it is still very orginal and interesting.
There is a big research into composing and vocals.
I love the part at 1:04 in Objects And Relations.
Supersex and It’s On Television exemplify their modern nowave.
The Birth Of Disneyland is a hit and the riff remains in head.
Girlfriend Is Worse is the more rock song and the easiest to approach.

The Arteries is a punk rock band very impressive.
It’s increasling rare to find some interestings bands in this style because there’s too many of them worldwide, now, and before.
You can’t help but notice the talent of these guys.
My friend Tomska made me discover that band.
When you listen to this album, many references come to mind : A Wilhelm Scream, Less Than Jake and sometimes even Billy Talent.
Doing The Rounds and No Place Like Home are rich in melodies and interesting rhythms.
Vocals and Choirs are amazing in Acoustic Associations and Dead Sea.
I love the minor dimension of Hey Mister.
A successful artwork, a very powerfull production, what more can you ask ?

Here is a Power Rock / Punk Band from New Jersey,
I just received their album “This One’s On You” before its release.
This band got raw vocals, it reminds me of Bane’s singer (Boston) in a way.
The music sounds like Transistor Transistor but more rock, with a brighter and powerful touch.
Garden State is the most punk song and of course my favorite.
In This One’s On You music sounds in a way like the norvegian Rumble In Rhodos.
Then I like the guitar riff in Linen Line.
Interesting first full length for These Branches.

The Tropic Rot
(2009, Ferret Music) USA, Florida
This is the late album of Poison The Well and then the band is unfortunately on a hiatus.
There, the band explores more and more the rock sides of their music, and continue in the path of “Versions” and that is not a good news for some of their fan. By my side, I really like it.
I think a single of this album is Antartica Inside Me : a very moving build-up and melodic, live here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm0e1dK5sHc
“The Tropic Rot” still got is powerful songs with Celebrate The Pyre and Makeshift Clay You. I really like the beautiful ambiances created by Chris Hornbrook in the drum parts.
Without you And Another I’m Nothing and Are You Anywhere are the slowest and very moving too, the musicians are still over the top, and we still got Moreira greatest vocals performance.
A very good album still. (too many still in there haha)

Purple Sabbath is a slow build-up and a success, the riff at 3:28 is genius, it’s one of my favorite song from Poison The Well.

This album is a turning point in Poison The Well Discography, because they explore now the rockest sides of their music and more clean vocals.
My coup de coeur is the furious Naive Monarch.
Nagaina is a single for this album and really captivating, the riff at 2:22 is breathtaking.
Breathing’s For The Bird finale is wonderful at 2:04.
Prematurio Del Baby is a weird song, brutal and contrasted, very interesting and one of the best produced song of this record.

This album is essential like Poison The Well themselves, figurehead of the post-hardcore scene.
It’s one of the most melodic and easy to access hardcore band.
Jeffery Moreira is one of the few singer able to rock as well in screaming as in singing, and in live performance too.
Poison The Well is moving too : how can’t you help yourself crying at 1:07 in For A Bandaged Iris or at 1:41 in Ghost Chant or in 1:36 too in Apathy Is A Cold Body.
Poison The Well is pure energy too : Crystal Lake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9_PPdtBIPM) or Zombies Are Good For Your Health are killer songs.

It’s a recording of their live performance at the famous John Peel Radio session in 2001 for BBC.
The artwork and pictures are awesome and the silvery sleeve is great.
This is the only live record by The Locust (As far as I know) and the sound is nice. It’s really interesting to listen to the beginning of their future “Plague Soundscapes” in songs like How To Become A Virgin.
It’s also really interesting that songs like Cattle Mutilation or Stucco Obelisks Labeled As Trees get a second life.

New Erections
(2007, Anti Records) USA, California
The Locust’s latest album and I hope not their last !
You have a polished and powerful production and mix done by Alex Newport. The spatialisation is a success and the mix is really clear. Each instrument is understandable, which is not always easy in this kind of music.
The main difference with the older releases is the come back of “the lower vocals” (Joey) like in their early records (Scavenger Invader).
For me, The Locust is truly a unique band, made of four virtuosi with their instruments. I mean it.
You won’t be surprised that all the songs are really complex, brutal and amazingly composed and played.
The number of layers, effects and details in their music is huge (like in God Wants Us All To Work In Factories)
I love the part at 1:05 in Full Frontal Obscurity. I remember listening to it loud and in loop mode in my car when I was still in college.
You’ll find a live video here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knJFgp_y_MY
Magna Cum Laude to Bobby Bray for his complex tapping parts throughout the CD.
The drum parts are mind-blowing, like in Hot Tubs Full Of Brand New Fuel at 0:43 for a crazy minute or at 0:23 in We Have Reached An Official Verdict : Nobody Gives A Shit and his master acceleration on bass drum.
Tower Of Mammal‘ s keyboard parts remind me of some songs from An Albatross but more brutal.
To conclude, vocals and lyrics are still scary and funny.

Plague Soundscapes
(2003, Anti Records) USA, California
“Plague Soundscapes” is the album which turned me into a The-Locust-Hardcore-Fan. First, it’s a real turning-point in their story, because it’s the first album with a good mix and production. Alex Newport is an amazing magician who succeeded to mix the un-mixable. You can very clearly understand each instrument, and it’s awesome.
Indeed, it was really disappointing in their previous releases that you couldn’t really appreciate the quality of the drum play or Joey’s synthesizers.
It’s the first album where Gabe leaves the guitar for the drumkit and this definitely changed the band dimension : before it was crazy linear blast and now it’s much more complex and researched drum riffs.
I scream in my own band and I’m really amazed by the vocal performance of the duo Bray / Pearson. Their vocals are really powerful and high-pitched (like in Anything Jesus Does, I Can Do Better), I don’t understand how they survive their own tour.
This album is a must in terms of soundscapes and composition quality. I have been listening to it for years and I still discover some details or subtlety in some guitar or bass parts.
The song titles are still funny : Anything Jesus Does, I Can Do Better or Priest With The Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Get Out Of My Bed.
I love The Half-Eaten Sausage Would Like To See You In His Office and its amazing videoclip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCTrTPRClNM.
The drum riff in Who Wants A Dose Of The Clap ? is awesome and powerful.

Later, I listened to it again and again and I started to love Moth-Eaten Deer Head and Twenty-Three Full-Time Cowboy and its awesome end “Sometimes werewolves look like little bunnies”.
Then I became a fan with “Plague Soundscapes” and I came back to this album with this awesome artwork, that a friend of mine, Boul, tatooed on his arm.
Then I started to sing Nice Tranquil Thumb In Mouth alone in my shower, and falling asleep to their soft screams at 0:12 in Stucco Obelisks Labeled As Trees.

First full length for All Leather.
I couldn’t wait for this CD to be released after their first awesome Ep and It was definitely worth it.
It reaches an higher level of finishing and success in the production and mixing. The electro drums rendering is powerfull and the guitar effects are really homogeneous in the mix (like in : Moist Around The Edge)
All tracks are interesting and differents.
When I Grow Up, I Wanna F*ck Like A Girl is a single of this album and the one I loved the most first : the noisy guitar riff which starts each time is awesome and the cowbell rhythm kills.

Here is an umpteenth great project from the hypercreative Justin Pearson.
I always followed his projects and label 31G and I’m always amazed by the fact he always surprized me. What’s the trick ?
All Leather is a post-punk/electro band, with a guitar, an electronic drumkit and vocal (Justin). Nathan Joyner is the guitar player, from the late and awesome Some Girls, where Justin played bass.
The layers and effects are genius (like in Please Jesus, Send Me Someone To Fuck).
The whole thing is weird, brutal, binairy and puzzling at the same time.
The lyrics are very funny :
Wait a second, God’s last name really isn’t Damn It?
