Go Plastic
(2001, Warp Records) UK
 Squarepusher Go Plastic
I discovered Squarepusher just after Aphex twin, on their label Warp, with his “Do You Know Squarepusher ?” album (to be reviewed).
“Go plastic” is one of his first album in his discography and it’s one of the last I listened to. Tom Jenkinson (aka Squarepusher) is a very good bass player and electronica artist.
This album is a part of his Drum’n'Bass++ wave, kind of speedy Amon Tobin playing on Aphex Twin’s synthesizers. Sometimes, he adds some bass guitar riffs, but it’s very few compared to what he releases now.
Most of my favorite songs on this album are very similar, Drum’n'Bass : Go ! spastic, Greenways Trajectory and Boneville Occident.
My Red Hot Car includes some sampled vocals then pitched down, which made the song’s fresh, that’s probably why it’s the single of the album, pre-released on Ep.
Also, The most interesting song in my opinion, is The Exploding Psychology, and its awesome videoclip. A feeling of wide spaces is given by his particular reverb and sound effects. There is complex micro-beats mixed with a lot of short riffs inside it, this give a preview of his earlier works.

TV loves you back
(2008, Anticon Records) USA, California
Restiform Bodies TV Loves You Back
“Manu I think I have new stuffs for you” – Milan with an happy face.
Milan made me discover the weirdest side of hiphop.
But Restiform Bodies is a very, very weird one.
This band should be the weirdest hiphop band ever, with DoseOne’s projects of course. Born from The Passage ashes and signed with Anticon, This trio play an electro hiphop, very technical and wild.
First song I listened to is Consumer Culture Wave which start with an abstract electro riff, then comes the voice with a counter time flow.
David Bryant doesn’t breath. That’s it. His oratories seem endless and he does it live (from what I watched on Youtube). The most impressive examples are in A Pimp-like God from 0:28 to 1:05 or in Panic Shopper from 2:25 to 3:15.
Added to his technical flow and his lyrics full of interesting images :
“I got a long list of criticism for my superiors that I hoist like a heater from the holster of my hero with a dream in mind of meter-less convenient street parking, I feed a coin to the computer to put my head down keep walking”,
David sings with very weir chorus. My initials impressions were : I dislike them, then when I get used to it, It’s a real plus in their music.
The productions are very impressive, with a wide variety of originals synthesizers (Bobby Trendy Addendum) and changing beats. This band is really one of my favorites.

Never Stop
(2010, Universal) USA, Minneapolis
I just received The Bad Plus’ last album, one of my favorite band ever.
In this album you just have original compositions, which is a first compare to all their past albums, with many covers.
I just really like four songs in this album, and I found the others a little bit boring.
I really like this low piano in My Friend Metatron, the groovy rythm of Super America and the crazy build-up of The Radio Tower has a Beating Heart.
Berry Loves To Dance is my favorite song on the album.
I can’t wait for see them live.

These are the Vistas
(2003, Columbia Records) USA, Minneapolis
The Bad Plus These are The Vistas
My friend Mainro had a musical project in Valenciennes’s University, where I studied. With his band, they decided to do a cover of Aphex Twin’s Flim, and that’s why Mainro made me discover The Bad Plus Flim Cover.
“These are the Vistas” is in my opinion a major album in music history.
It’s a virtuoso trio : Bass, Drum and Piano, who play a music between Jazz and Progressive Rock. They are very famous for the following covers : Flim, Smell Like Teen Spirit, Heart of Glass…
But it’s more for their original compositions (mainly composed by Reid Anderson, the Bassist) that I love them and precisely Big Eater.
Their music is complex and dissonant, but pretty much composed which let you easily remind the piano riffs.
I love too the 1972 Bronze Medalist song and its drum solo at 4:50.
They record their music in one shot, no overdub, that’s rare nowadays.
I heard that The Bad Plus was one of the last Jazz band who still sells CDs and signs on Major Labels, and it’s easy to understand it : They really brought a new view on this music with many talents.

Ate Ate Ate
(2008, Robotradio Records) Italia
 Putiferio Ate Ate Ate
I discovered Robotradio Records, and its awesome bands, from an add in Noisemag. If you listen to “Ate Ate Ate”, you can figure yourself that Putiferio understood many faces of music. An original aesthetic, good musicians, lyrics with many references (Bob Dylan in Give Peace a Cancer, thank you Rachael), ambiances, a great sound, and finally a beautiful artwork. The digipack is well done with golden snakes drawings into a body shape on a black background, and handwritten lyrics. You get it : I love the artwork, but is that so interesting ? Yep it is, So I tried to find out which printer provides a so good job and… Putiferio’s music is complex, with many riffs changes, like in Give Peace a Cancer or We have all the Razors Gone. It changes very often, but always in an interesting and surprising way.
The whole thing with many references (Tea for two or breaks à la Chemical Brothers into an Indie Rock way). Strings are awesome and the noisy aspect is under control and build wide ambiances. They sound too like The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, in a way.
I’ll end by a description of my favorite part in the CD, in Putiferio goes to War at 8:00 after an Electro break à la Brian Eno, and a catchy drum break, then what a slow and powerful riff : Awesome !

Blessed and Cursed
(2010, Century Media Records) UK
 Cover de Blessed and Cursed
I met the Devil Sold His Soul (UK) guys when I played before them at a festival in Lille in 2009 (see A Fragile Hope post below, to come).
After signing with Century Media Records, the band became bigger and better : with wonderful artwork and a very clear and powerful sound. Also the teaser, the single Callous Heart, was really tempting.
In the new album, you’ll find the main ingredients which made “A Fragile Hope” a success : A great sense of composing, a clever play between the two guitars, and finally better continuity. Ed’s vocals are more defined in the new album than ever.
My favorite song is the fastest and darkest one (surprising !) Truth has come. We find there a lot of melodies à la Envy, but still with the DSHS recipe, which characterizes them.
This time, the album provides ambiances that carry a message of hope, in my opinion. I have to admit that I prefer their darker side from “A Fragile Hope”. I hope my band will cross their road again soon.
