Duck Duck Goose

Off Yourself

(2010, Roam The River Records) USA, Californie

I discovered this band through Sam Pura from The Panda Studios (http://blog.thepandastudios.com/). Sam mixed our last album “Loud Noise Making” and this Duck Duck Goose’s second album.

That time, the sound is more rock/punk than metal and it’s a great. You’ll find again their catchy and powerful rhythmics and their fine noisy guitar riffs.

David, the singer, deliver us an amazing vocal performance, I really love what he did with Shitstorm (and their funny choirs at 0:21).

Pollution People with HHLL’s singer featuring is brilliant, here is a live video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1Czn-VaL1w

The part at 2:24 in Firetrucks On Fire is terrific.

A very good album, I can’t wait for the next one.

Noise, Noise and More Noise

(2008, Warcon Records) USA, California

Duck Duck Goose Noise Noise & More Noise

“Noise, Noise and more Noise” is their first album, and yes : What a success ! The first thing that beat/destroyed my ears was the sound : What power ! Really powerful and compressed, the drumkit releases a huge energy. The strings are also well mixed.

David’s voice is as violent as possible and matches very well with the break parts (like at 0:49 in Wonderful wizard of LSD). I really like these little parts full of synthetic sounds, which fall between rock’n'roll parts (Boy oh Boy, I ain’t no wiz kid. à 1:23) and mosh parts.

This band is for me a great discovery, because bands à la Heavy Heavy Low Low, who bring a rock touch to hardcore, are rare. When the album finishes, you just think one thing : We want more ! Can’t wait for the new one.

Gentle Veincut

Concrete Landing

(2006, Whosbrain) Germany

Cover de Gentle Veincut - Concrete Landing

I heard about this band when we played at Festivalette in 2008. They played on Sunday, the day after we played, so I missed them…
Then I bought their album online and what a surprise !
A total new genre of rock music, sad and very powerful, with vocals à la Guts Pie Earshot, a very rich melody on Guitar and a unique sound.
I saw them live later in Bagnolet, Paris at Pixi Bar on the 9th of April, 2009. They were four in the band, and friendly. I spoke with them a little, getting contacts for gigs for H.O.Z.
These people played a crazy set. The drum was more powerful live than on the CD and I heard some of the new songs.
It wasn’t until later that I found out how Diego makes that weird guitar sound ? Indeed he uses a kind of “sovtek” Russian amp with little distortion, and an Kramer’s aluminium neck guitar, to create this resonating sound.
My favorite song is Porthole view (for Ivica). In this song, you can really feel the story evolving. The vocals and the feelings are strong, and they grow until the finale.

The introduction of Friendly Neighborhood provides a very weird sound effect, with a lot of bass and reinforcing rhythmics.

If I had only one negative thing to say, it would be that I would love to have the same feeling of power from the drum kit on CD as it gives off live.

Arvo Pärt

Orient Occident

(1999, ECM Records) Estonia

Cover de Arvo Pärt - Orient Occident

“Times and Winds”, a Turkish movie released in 2008, really impressed me when I lived in Lille. This movie was shot in amazing landscapes, and has a slow and sad rhythm. I distinctly remember the sequence when the son tries to kill his father, who has the flu, by emptying his father’s medicine into the sink. Afterward I realized that the strange ambiance of this scene can be attributed to the music by Arvo Pärt, who is an Estonian composer. The soundtrack to “Times and Winds” consists of tracks from “Te Deum” and “Orient Occident”, the first two albums of Arvo Pärt’s that I bought. It’s pretty hard to describe this music, but it’s slow, powerful and intense.
Then I discovered his other albums, like “Fratres”, which has a very technical cello intro, “In Principio” and “Alina”. The power of Pärt’s music comes from Tintinabula : pure sounds resonating.
I then learned more about him on the internet and from a documentary in which Thom Yorke and Bjork are interviewed… this helped me to understand Arvo Pärt’s concept and who he is.
I choose two songs : Orient & Occident, which is a string (and brass ?) song, incredibly well recorded. What a powerful bass sound from the strings and high fidelity for the violins tremolo. This song consists of one repeated theme throughout which he plays on the harmonies. I also love the fourth movement of Como Cierva Sedienta – IV which features a very high pitched, sad and powerful female choir.
Arvo Pärt’s oeuvre was a major discovery for me in music.

Alec K. Redfearn and The Eyesore

The Blind Spot

(2007, Cuneiform Records) USA, Providence

Alec K. Redfearn and The Eyesore Blindspot

“What is this vampire music ?” -- Rachael

Maybe that’s the first thought you’ll have about this album.  This review is special, because one of the songs from this album inspired me to name this blog Radiator Hymn.

I discovered Alec K. Redfearn when he played at La Malterie in Lille (unfortunately I missed the gig). In any case, I listened to his discography carefully after that.

He and his orchestra are an example of the most unfairly unknown alternative bands : his music is totally acceptable, nice, new and well-produced.

It is made up of a rich orchestra, sad strings, an accordion with digital effects, Redfearn’s original voice and a weird female choir.
The riffs of his different songs stick in your head and the lyrics are like described paintings. The harmonies are very interesting : I love the sound effect produced by the combination of accordion/guitar(bass ?)/violins, which sounds almost digital, like in Blue on White.
The Burning Hand reminds me the band “Radikal Satan” (soon to be reviewed).
Again, It’s hard for me to select just 5 songs, because the entire CD is continuous and all the tracks flow perfectly from one to the next.

Grems

Broka Billy

(2010, Les éditions populaires) France, Paris

Cover de Grems Broka Billy

Broka Billy was claimed as the French Alternative Hiphop’s Rendez-vous of 2010.
Nothing was really new since the TTC/Fuzati/Le Jouage… wave between 2000 and 2005.
Grems has, in my opinion, the following strenghts :  captivating timber, technical and atypical flow,  very good productions.
The Broka B-ook is a classy item, becauses of the photos, pictures or vector graphics made with the lyrics of each songs.

It’s an interesting concept and the qualities are all presents. (I got a crush for Place de la com pictures).
The album is well-done, original and new, as for his sonority as the vocal performance of Grems and the others featuring.

The black dot for me is the lyrics. there are pretty poor and about egotrip and stupid porn-songs (as actual TTC music).
Photosoap is the exception, with a “Portrait” of the graphic designer worker and Dimanche that I already liked the original version, and now with q more punchy production in this remix.

Rencontre avec un ballon is the most interesting song (except the lyrics) mainly for the two first verses, the end is pretty boring. This song’s videoclip is well-done and a little bit scary, it matches perfectly with Grems imaginary.

To finish, “Broka Billy” is a good album, interesting and with a good sound and graphic quality, I’ll wait his next one, but I hope this time with much interesting lyrics and others of his musical-Portrait.

Pigsty

Pigs are Back

(2004, Bizzare Leprous Production) Czech Republic

Cover de Pigsty Pigs are back

There is few Grind band which still surprized me. How a band, from Czech Republic, not well-known, could have a so good sound in 2004 ?
Pigsty is not a shrewdly Band, with pretty simple lyrics in a Miss Piggy Universe, that’s what you feel, carried by Topi’s sweet voice.
What is very impressive too, is how well the sound engineer rendered the speed and power of the drum play, in the blast parts. Otyn is, of course, a good technician, classical for this music style. About strings, we have simple riffs but pretty catchy.

There is too some interludes like Tabalabadach et Gebr Ghare-kind and samples (from the Videogame Halo and others)  spread everywhere on the album, which give an interesting ambience : Most of the actual grind bands miss that.

As paradoxal it looks like, I’m never bored of listening again and again the powerfull The Universe pig + Monkey = The Essence of Existence with only few riffs, but with an impressive structure and vocals. I leave you to my Top 5 , Please notify the quality of the song’s titles.

Some Girls

Heaven’s Pregnant Teen

(2006, Three One G) USA, California

The final album from the band, “Heaven’s Pregnant Teens” is probably the most homogeneous and constructed album of their discography. The production is well done, better even than their last EP “DNA will have its way” which was very good then. The “brut” punk vein that defined their early years is combined with weird and interesting bass sounds from Justin Pearson (bassist of The Locust), and crazy soundscapes in the guitar parts (Marry Mortuary Song). These guitar soundscapes would later resonate in All Leather’s music.

Wes’ vocals are pretty intense, as are Justin’s backup vocals. More so than in the old records there is a huge focus on flow and rythm.
The artwork is interesting and provocative as always. There is a second version of the cover inside the box with their second drummer dressed as a nun smoking a cigarette. Funny!
Gabe play an amazing drum solo on Deathface, my favorite song on “Heaven’s Pregnant Teens”.

The lyrics are well-written and comical. I really like this extract from Retard and Feathered :

The second verse is as bored as the first
Satanic gloom and barbiturate doom
Pawning guitars to heat up a spoon

and this one from Warm Milk :

Don’t blueprint me you casket designers
You’re not dead like me, you little lip-liners

It’s pretty hard for me to just keep 5 top songs on this album, which I love for its coherence and totality.

Live at Scheld’Apen

(April 2006, Antwerpen, Belgium)

Some Girls Live at Scheld’Apen en 2006. Photo C. Mégret

I saw Some Girls in Antwerpen, Belgium, on the 21st of April,2006 at Scheld’Apen with Colia. The place was totally lost in the industrial area, in an alternative venue, a kind of squat. There was a weird ambiance in that dark place. We were just two, far from home. The concert hall had two rooms, one with the bar and the merchandising area, the second with the stage and access to the vegan kitchen, of course. I remember spending a lot of time at the merch’ area because there were a lot of CD’s from Justin Pearson’s 31G label. It was hard for me to find these CD’s at that time since it was before i could buy them online. That night I bought albums by das Oath, Give up the Ghost and the Malkovich one. At the bar, I stood next to Justin, the bass player. It was the first time I’d seen him, but I didn’t speak to him because I was so shy and had always been impressed by his music.

The first band, Malkovich, was half “rock’n'roll” half Hardcore, and pretty fun. Then Some girls set up all their equipment, and I saw for the first time their very impressive pedalboard. They did their check-line, but were slow to start because of a weird and powerful bass noise from the speakers. After the issue was fixed, the concert started. It was very intense and visceral. The climax was the song Deathface -- a true performance that included a looped rythm and guitar riff that lasted fifteen minutes. The volume was very loud and reached you physically. Wesley Eisold’s impressive vocal performance had a haunted air to it. After those first surprising minutes, people thought they’d seen the max, but the power increased even more when the five members sang the last lyrics “Who will fuck when the people are gone ?” and they screamed in loop “Ape” for five infinite minutes. I remember their tortured faces and the drool that flew from their mouths to the mics. Everytime I listen to that song, I am directly reminded of that moment, alone and far from the world around me.

Giovanni Mirabassi

Architectures

(1998, Sketch) Italia

Giovanni Mirabassi Architectures

I never was a Jazz specialist, I owe the most part of my discoveries to my friends Milan and Mainro… First of all, I was attracted to the weirdest and most modern branches of Jazz : The Bad Plus, John Zorn etc… who I’ll review next. Then I had a crush on Mirabassi who plays in a more conventional Jazz Style.
I saw him live in 2008 at Tourcoing Jazz Festival on the 21st of October, before Avishai Cohen Trio. I think I always had a wide sensitivity for piano, and that’s probably why I love so much Place de la Mairie song, which plays loop on my sound system. I don’t really know how to describe it technically, it’s mainly the well-composed theme that remains in my head. Giovanni plays it in so many differents and interesting ways.
I found this album very recently, because it is out of print. I love the song Dimanche de pluie which has an ambiance between drama and intensity and has powerful low piano chords and intense waves well-dosed throughout the song. I noticed Giovanni’s piano virtuosity in his melodic escapes.
Really don’t match is in my opinion the most original song of “Architectures”, with audacious scales and complex rythmics and an impressive drum solo at 3:00. I only kept three songs in my top 5, as the others are very slow and didn’t catch my attention. This is probably due to the fact I’m too young for it. I just hope that my musical taste matures faster than my deafness does.
