Idiot Saint Crazy

12.12.12

(2012, D.I.Y) France, Dunkerque.

Idiot Saint Crazy - 12.12.12

Second album by Idiot Saint Crazy.

You’ll find the ambiances from the first album plus an awesome sound and some à la Meshuggah parts, and all that since the very first Weltanschauung and its terrific Finale.

I’m happy to find in I WTF some parts of I (Really) Want To Fight on his first album, but now with vocals ans synthesizers which is great.

My favorite song is The Fragrance Of Love (huge break at 2:00, and I love how the vocals arrive at 2:22). The vocals are a huge enhancement of Valentin’s music, I remember loving that son when he played live the 24th of April 2012 at L’international, Paris.

Idiot Saint Crazy’s live show is something : it is a one-man-band with many loops and a crazy pedalboard.

Adule Et Sent is genius : Valentin masters his guitar and his delays effects.

The build up in 12.12.12 with Bishneit Frustuck Skeleton‘s theme is a success.

I loved Frisson Frippon with great soundscapes (baryton saxophon …) and very interesting melodic phrasing (here is a live video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alHxd70oxUM)

A very good album, I can’t wait for the next one.

Mega bonus, Dunkirk Counterpointless‘s terrific video clip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCNO6DYq8vk

Fluo Dead Boy

(2007, Le Cluricaun) France, Dunkerque.

Idiot Saint Crazy - Fluo Dead Boy

Idiot Saint Crazy, aka Valentin Carette, is a friend and a guitar hero.

He plays in the band Yolk and in many other projects, where his brother, Antonin, plays bass guitar. Antonin plays trumpet as well in Ing Ong.

Valentin’s great power is to create true and complex universes : Sublime.

Reference-wise, you’ll think of Secret Chief 3, Mr. Bungle or Fantomas.

The first riff in I (Really) Want To Fight remains in mind.

My favorite song is The Street, I love the Camille Saint-Säens touch in that song.

Delphine Delegorgue’s vocals are superb and really impressive in ISC’s Waltz.

You’ll dance all night long on the surf-rock Bishneit Frustuck Skeleton.

I love the part at 1:51 in Ing Ong, what a crazy song..

A very good record.

Yowie

Damning With Faint Praise

(2012, Skingraft Records) USA, St. Louis.

Yowie - Damning With Faint Praise

Here is Yowie’s new album that I discovered live in Paris @ Le Rigoletto the 13th of October 2012.

What a big slap.

This live video of Shriners Sure Do Cuss A Lot speaks for itself :  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocRDInfSnXk

That song got two climaxes at 1:32 and at 3:44 (in the album version), with devilish drum parts, I almost cried.

I don’t know what I prefer between the drummer madness, the guitarist (kind-of-bassist) energy or the guitarist (noisyman) precision in dissonance. It seems that these three guys are nice.

The speed changes in Eternally Collapsing Object are a strong momentum in the live show too, as its Finale which makes the crowd dance.

The taping parts in Whippersnapper are terrific, as for the central part in I Could Care Less with the sads ambiences (and I love too the way that this theme comes back at the end of the song).

I really love the dialog between the guitars in Slowly But Surly.

Let’s mention that the artwork is great.

Music for mad guitarists ? No, tomorrow’s pop music;

Cryptooology

(2004, Skingraft) USA, St. Louis.

Yowie - Cryptooology

Thanks to Nick Sadler (Daughters) I discovered Yowie (when he told me about the bands he was listening to).

I bought the album and… the music equals what you got from the artwork : craziness.

The drummer is in furious mode in Trina.

In deed all the drum parts in every song are furious like at 1:56 in the impressive speed-up tempo in Tamika.

Tenesha‘s intro is huge.

Talisha‘s part at 1:58 and the Finale at 3:40 are Grand too.

A mine of good ideas.

Capsule

Cutie Cinema Replay

(2003, Contemonde) Japan.

Capsule - Cutie Cinema Replay

Let’s finish this made in japan panorama in two bands.

I discovered Capsule 6 years ago when I was looking for Ep of the american hardcore band with the same name.

Then I watched this video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7dvB3shNgk

I think that this song (with a Sonic Coaster Pop featuring) is really interesting.

Production and composition reach here a really high level. The bass riff at 1:45 is pretty funny.

I love the game gear solo at 2:46.

Another funny track is Plastic Girl is a terrific duck beat, accordion and catchy choruses.

The devil is probably under this project again.

Enjoy

Vocalonexus

Exit Tunes Presents Vocalonexus vol2.

(2011, Exit Tunes Records) Japan.

Vocalonexus - Exit Tunes Presents Vol2

Japanese always have an advance of 20 years in music. In an alternative reality.

I discovered this weird music with Chloé, Karl-aka-hardcore-living-knowledge’s daughter, who told me about “virtual singers” (?).

You may read everywhere on the CD box the name of Miku Hatsune, present on this Exit Tunes’ compilation, which is a label who focus on Vocaloïds : http://www.radiatorhymn.com/?p=3276.

First of all, it is really hard to order a record on amazon.co.jp (thanks to google translate) but now it becomes a little bit more difficult to understand : Miku Hatsune doesn’t exist (?!).

For the laziest who didn’t click on the wikipedia link, Vocaloïds are synthetics vocals produced by a Yamaha program from a text-file and a melody. You just import these data and the software sings ! Nothing human in this. Miku Hatsune is attached with a manga-like character.

Most of the songs and the packaging won’t surprize you : this is typical J-pop/Manga music.

Except two extremely original songs, composed by the devil himself :

Let’s start with the opening track Matryoshka : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JGaQ3g8WU4.

I mean, the guy who did this, was probably raised into the worst electro-rock-hardcore influences (mainly because of his rhythmic patterns and in using synthesizers that no one will dare to use !)

This tortured spirit is Kenshi Yonezu, born in 1991.

I think this production is really original, complex and these synthetics vocals are really amazing.

After being bored by 4 tracks J-pop like (like the 15 songs which follow the fifth track) RE-BAM here comes the scary Antichlorobenzene and its sweet lyrics : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfkn9FvjH90

Man ! from 0:45, this choirs are hell incarnated !

I have nightmares and I can’t sleep anymore.

My curiosity will lost me.

Help.

Zs

New Slaves

(2010, The Social Registry) USA, NY

I bought this album for this amazing song : Acres Of Skin.

I’m really impressed by the wide variety of sounds built only with a guitar (with weirdly crossed strings in X) a sax (with amazing effects) and some handclaps.

It sounds like a tribal-hypnotic song.

The production is awesome and the Finale at 6:30 with this saturation touch is massive.

Here is a live video : http://vimeo.com/10494524

I love too Don’t Touch Me with this video games glitches, which remind me of some songs of Fantomas’ “Suspended Animation”.

Then New Slaves is a big build-up à la “The Hard” Ep.

Finally, the artwork is great, this album is very interesting.

The Hard Ep

(2008, Three One G) USA, NY

Another Arty-Noise Band from Brooklyn.

I bought this Ep at the halloween discounts on 31G.

I was intriged by this sound repeated again and again for minuts.

This Ep is only one track : a huge build-up very weird and experimental.

The soundscapes in it are very impressive, there is a huge work on the effects on the sax and the guitar.

I love the rhythmic build-up at 11:00.

This Ep is as surprising as its cover.

The Blind Spot

(2007, Cuneiform Records) USA, Providence

Alec K. Redfearn and The Eyesore Blindspot

“What is this vampire music ?” -- Rachael

Maybe that’s the first thought you’ll have about this album.  This review is special, because one of the songs from this album inspired me to name this blog Radiator Hymn.

I discovered Alec K. Redfearn when he played at La Malterie in Lille (unfortunately I missed the gig). In any case, I listened to his discography carefully after that.

He and his orchestra are an example of the most unfairly unknown alternative bands : his music is totally acceptable, nice, new and well-produced.

It is made up of a rich orchestra, sad strings, an accordion with digital effects, Redfearn’s original voice and a weird female choir.
The riffs of his different songs stick in your head and the lyrics are like described paintings. The harmonies are very interesting : I love the sound effect produced by the combination of accordion/guitar(bass ?)/violins, which sounds almost digital, like in Blue on White.
The Burning Hand reminds me the band “Radikal Satan” (soon to be reviewed).
Again, It’s hard for me to select just 5 songs, because the entire CD is continuous and all the tracks flow perfectly from one to the next.
