Child Bite

Vision Crimes

(2013, Joyful Noise Recordings) USA, Detroit.

Child Bite - Crime Visions

Last 10″ by Child Bite : the sound/mixing is excellent !

You’ll note that a new drummer is here : Ben Moore.

The album starts with the powerful Abysmal Splatter that throw you down their universe and makes you feel their live energy. Child Bite are good in ambiences (Great break at 1:51 on the toms).

Life As A Parasite‘s composition is terrific, that intro with the bass riff, these complex rhythmic patterns and that looped riff on the guitar : everything is huge in that song !

All these riffs and ideas in The Nerves are genius and I love the singing (great part at 0:39)

I love Shawn’s flow in Mutilation Revival.

That Ep ends with Save Your Scream with a catchy riff that stucks to your brain. I love this kind-of-theremin layer.

We were lucky to open with H.O.Z. for their show in Lille (North of France) @ l’Aeronef, the 20th of April 2013.

Their show was massive and moving !

The artwork is absolutely beautiful, good work Shawn (Child Bite’s singer)

An amazing album !

You’ll find here a videoclip for The Nab Munch Is Gone : http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lRBz_JraJ4Q (amazing ideas at 2:13).

The part at 2:18 in Smear Where The Face Was is terrific and the I like the different ambiences in that song.

I love the way that both the guitars riffs are combined in Vapor In The Orphan Loop.

The artwork is beautiful as usual.

The Living Breathing Organ Summer

(2010, Joyful Noise Recordings) USA, Detroit.

Child Bite - The Living Breathing Organ Summer

Child Bite is a quatuor from Detroit who play a hardcore, punk or noise music with Shawn’s signature voice.

If I should compare that music, I would say it sounds like Dope Body, Some Girls or Jello Biafra.

Manacles is a killer song, I love how the bass guitar (Sean) arrives at 0:53 and all these guitar’s ambiences along the song (Brandon).

The “Oh oh oh” chorus in Odd Inn remains in mind.

Once again I love the bass riff and that catchy chorus in Paws Perlious. Is there a Deerhoof touch in there or it’s just me being crazy ?

I like a lot that weird chorus in Age Of Vacuum Trotters (awesome part at 1:34).

The vocal performance on Limpin’ Rowd & Pussy Footin’ is terrific !

A very good album !

Converge

All We Love We Leave Behind

(2012, Epitaph) USA, Massachusetts

Converge - All We Love We Leave Behind

And one new album by Converge.

I really love that one. It is a little different than the previous records, and I love that Jacob sing in a more melodic way.

The album starts with Aimless Arrow which makes me think of a Capsule’s song, with a terrific drum part at 1:45 until the end of the song.

The soundscapes and the taping parts in Glacial Pace are really interesting ! (Awesome Finale at 4:03).

My favorite song on that disc is Tender Abuse, really violent, à la “Jane Doe” with a better sound even.

I love Shame In The Way which makes me think of a song by Swarm Of The Lotus, another terrific band recorded some years ago by Kurt Ballou.

That album ends with the perfect All We Love We Leave Behind, new epic song, the brand new Jane Doe song, with moving parts and a magic Finale.

I love the artwork, B&W on the outside, and colorful in the inside.

A huge album !

Napalm Death Split

(2012, Deathwish Inc.) USA, Massachusetts

Converge - Napalm Death

I love that guitar’s riff with all the bends in No Lights Escapes.

I’m not a huge Entombed’s fan, so that Wolverine Blues cover doesn’t really move me.

Napalm Death offer us two soft songs as usual. I just wished that this high-medium-drum-sound would have been different as it doesn’t really transmit the power of Danny’s play.

The way that Will By Mouth end is really cool.

That artwork with a woman waving a lightning is really beautiful.

Converge - Dropdead Split

Runaway is terrific ! I love the dialog between Jacob on the vocals and Kurt playing these little riffs. That song is fast and brutal and this is enlighted by the great quality of the recording and mix.

I’m a Dropdead’s fan and I was so happy to learn they released a split together.

Paths Of Glory is a pure Dropdead song, with a very good sound !

I listen to that Ep a lot.

That transparent mixed brown and black color is a success.

Axe To Fall

(2009, Epitaph) USA, Massachusetts

That’s it ! Now I’m old and dumb and nostalgic.

Latest album of Converge and another great artwork as ever.
There is all the Converge recipies with a rock’n'roll and heavy touch that some will like or not. (End solo in Wishing Well)

Axe To Fall is the hit of this album, very technic and more powerful and innovating than before.

Here is the videoclip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jjBinzryFY

Losing Battles sounds more like one of the early songs.

Damages an interesting sludge touch and Dark Horse an heavy touch, and for both of these songs, I really found them more interesting as soosn as I saw them live.

As I said as the beginning, is a great album, but I prefered the darknest and power of their first albums.

I remember that I saw them 3 times in my life (twice in Paris, and one at The Groezrock in belgium) and I was amazed by their stage presence, but I could see that the vocals were a little bit tired because of the crazy tours they did since years.

But that year in Paris at the Trabendo, it was their first european gig and then : It was one of the best gig ever in my life, with Jacob with his full vocals power.

No Heroes

(2006, Epitaph) USA, Massachusetts

Another mythic Converge album with another sucessful artwork from Jacob.

“No heroes” is clearly in the fast and powerful vein and very homogeneous.

Some new with Heartache, first song with a complex and brand new rhythmic.

Another hit is No Heroes right after the great Weight Of The World. it’s a looped riff which grows and creates a lot of pressure.

Hellbound is one of their new live classics : very powerful too : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR0Vft1eON4&ob=av2nm

I really love the groove in the drum parts at the end of Sacrifice.

To The Lions reminds me of Jane Doe in a way and it’s a good idea to end like this.

You Fail Me

(2004, Epitaph) USA, Massachusetts

I discovered Converge with this album and this grand videoclip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjZMySPcQfI

Eagles Become Vulture is a huge slap in your face. “You Fail Me” is my favorite album of their discography, probably because it’s the one I listen to the most often, but because it’s really homogeneous.

All the tracks follow each other like a story, with its chapter, its break and its action part. You can keep every song.

It’s probably too one of the darkest and fastest album of their discography (Hope Street).

Many are the songs of this album which became classics and hit like the finale in Drop Out.
An other characteristic are the choirs of Kurt Ballou and Nate Newton (like in : Black Cloud)
This album is mythic, to buy now, faster.

Jane Doe

(2001, Equalvision) USA, Massachusetts

“Jane Doe” is their second best album in my opinion.

I can guess many people won’t agree that I prefer “You Fail Me” but I think “Jane Doe” gives the best songs of the band, the album is not as homogeneous as “You Fail Me”.

Fault And Fracture and its intro Concubine are a total must and probably the two songs which give me the envy of playing hardcore music with my band. they perfectly match with their beautiful videoclip : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go8KMq_WjLI

They are very talented and skilled, what a melody, what a power, what a groove.

These songs sum up the à la Converge style.

In Heaven In Her Arms, I love the part at 2:39, very loud and heavy.

You’ll notice the wonderfull artwork designed by Jacob. The band’s visual identity is a big plus in its popularity.

The part at 1:36 in The Broken Vow is one of their best live moment.

Finally Jane Doe is an awesome finale, very classy and easy to approach as by the hardcore public as by the indie rock or sludge public. You have to see this live.

Petitioning The Empty Sky

(1996, Ferret Record) USA, Massachusetts

Converge is one of my favorite bands, major icon of Hardcore. They’ve defined metalcore (evenif that term is wide nowadays) in adding Jacob Bannon’s supra-scream and heavy breaks to traditionnal punk hardcore.

The power of Converge is Jacob vocals (I love repeating myself) power and speed of the drummer, Ben Koller, the memorable guitar riffs of Kurt Ballou and the huge stage presence of Nate Newton (Bass).

“Petitioning The Empty Sky” is one of their first album and it’s really easy to figure the metal touch they add. It will become more subtle in their last records.

like at 2:42 in The Saddest Day one of their best live song or in Forsaken very trash metal.
Color Me Blood Red is another example of Kurt Ballou’s killer riffs which remains in head and made that song popular.
Finally in Dead you’ll find a preview of what will become the clean singings of Jacobs.

Unloved And Weeded Out (Compilation)

(2003, Deathwish Inc.) USA, Massachusetts

Nice Artwork for this compilation of unreleased tracks.

As a compilation, there is not really an homogeneity in between the songs.

I bought”Unloved And Weeded Our” for Downpour that I think terrific as for the rhythms as for the vocals.

I really live the break at 1:18, it really inspired me for my own vocals in my side-projects.

Tremor is one of this slow and powerful songs that I love, it’s just a little bit short.

Jacob’s Ladder is one of their songs with there is blast parts in between traditionnal punk beats and I like this effect.

I finally love Undo for its break at 1:28.

No Spill Blood - Street Meat

What a slap !

Two days ago (04/16/13) I was with Sylvain Bekaert aka the brave, Marine, Simon, Madeleine, and everyone to see Fang Island Live in Paris @ Le Batofar, in The Indie Air Festival.

No, I don’t recycle my posts.

So after Jean Jean who opened the festival, came that band I never heard of, with that weird artwork, named : No Spill Blood.

It is a Drum/Synth/Bass trio and it was a great show !

They play a music between Horse The Band and Marvin like in the great Good Company (Terrific harmonies).

Their music makes me think of Death From Above 1979 too. I love the heaviness of the couple bass/synthesizer on Junior : The live render is very impressive (terrific Finale at 2:29). What a drummer ! And what a bassist too in Fang Island’s live set haha.

I love the last song too : New Tricks and that drum riff at 3:11 is genius.

Part Chimp - Thriller

Let’s be clear : I want to be buried with that record.

The band reaches mountains in terms of power, fuzz, heaviness or emotions like in the song FFFFF (What a genius solo at 2:16 !)

I love the singing in Sweet T.

You’ll find all that in the huge Today 2. you need to listen to it on a real soundsystem, your headphone won’t be able to producte this warmy saturation as it should. The climax in that song is the most beautiful solo ever at  3:02. You are invited at Satan’s wedding.

That song introduces perfectly and logically Today 3 with a powerfull rhythmic pattern.

We opened for them with H.O.Z., the 24th of October 2009, @ La Malterie, Lille, and as at their live in Czech Republic, the sound was really, really loud and the show intense. I loved the vocal performance and I loved seeing them activating their fuzzs pedals one by one haha.

I love the contrast in Supermoody between that calm intro, came from Liars’ universe, and when they press the fuzz’s footswitch at 3:17 : Magic !

I like the bold riff and the sweet singing at the beginning of From You.

Story’s Told / Dead End‘s energy makes me think of the great first album by Swarm Of The Lotus.

I Like Your Picture is great, à la Akimbo but more meanest.

Many other great songs on that album like Burn The Witch, Gun Now

A Must-Have-In-Your-Collection-If-You-Can-Find-It.

Two Man Army

(2004, Label Man) Belgique.

Vandal X - Two Man Army

4th album and Gunther Liket arrived as new drummer.

From their live in Lille, on that album, I remember Jacobs Wife.  I love these guitar’s sounds. The singing is melodic and stays in mind. Terrific Finale at  2:00.

Overlord and Blow The Gasline‘s riffs are awesome.

The power in Since We Met is massive.

The vocal performance on Weapons Of Massdestruction is huge !

Some good songs !

13 Basic Hate Tracks

(2002, Label Man) Belgique.

Vandal X - 13 Basic Hate Tracks

That album starts with two songs where the guitar is too saturated for me.

In the saturated songs I do love Wish You Away.

All changes with She’s Killing Me (The first sample is funny haha).

Prepare is a great song, with a cleanest guitar and efficient riffs.

I like the guitar’s riff and power in Run Away Boy.

Some good songs.

Songs From The Heart

(1999, Label Man) Belgique.

Vandal X - Songs From The Heart

That album is different from the others.

It is noise rock music à la Shellac, and there is few screams.

The song that describes the most this album is the first one Happy.

For some reason Extra Cold makes me think of S.O.A.D. haha.

I think what I dislike on that record is that slow tempo.

For fans.

Little Man’s Blues

(1998, Zeppos Records) Belgique.

Vandal X - Little Man's Blues

Vandal X is a belgian noise-rock duo, let’s say noise-hardcore.

I met them in Lille at la Malterie the 12th of January 2008 when we opened for them with H.O.Z.

They play a very powerful music and both of them are singing.

“Little Man’s Blues” is their first album and sounds like it.

You may recognize some of the patterns presents in their future album and their taste for movie’s samples.

I enjoy Come On and its part at 1:48 or Highway Hooligan.

For fans.

12XU

Les Grandes Marées

(2011, Purepainsugar Records) France.

12XU - Les Grandes Marées

12XU is a french punk band, with french lyrics, and it seems they’ve exported their music in US and Japan ! Congratulations !

I love a lot this kind of emo-punk music, à la The Vicious.

I love how their LP sound on my turntable eventhough the sound of the mp3′s on their page is different and weird.

12XU’s power is the quality of their guitar’s riffs, like in Les Grandes Marées or Paysages Ecartés Des Plans.

I love the energy in Des Rues Mouillées.

The choirs in Figaro Magazine are well-done and I love the chorus in Transparent which remains in mind.

The artwork is really beautiful !

A good album !

Le Prince Harry

It’s Getting Worse

(2012, Teenage Menopause & Rockerill Records) Belgique.

Le Prince Harry - It's Getting Worse

Shazam is genius…

I was playing with H.O.Z. @ Le Mondo Bizarro in Rennes when I heard this weird synth-punk music which I liked : Le Prince Harry… Who are you ?

The mix between synthesizers and guitars is a success as soon as Fancy For A Cancer starts.

They will switch the drumkit for a rhythm machine on The Ditch or So Cold. I love the surfrock music spirit inside of their songs.

Living Dead In Toxcity makes me think of Marvin’s music and I love the effect on the vocals (amazing solo at 1:45).

I love the ambiences in No Way Out Of Wallonia with a à-la Chantal Morte vocal’s performance and Aphex-Twin soundscapes. Terrific part at 1:45.

It was hard to find their LP but really happy : The artwork is amazing.

A Must-Have-In-Your-Collection.

Fucking Invicible

Very Negative Ep

(2012, Atomic Actions Records) USA, Providence.

Fucking Invicible - Very Negative Ep

Fucking Invicible is a new hardcore band from Providence, with Alexis (Daughters) on the vocals.

They play an In-your-face hardcore music in between Some Girls or Magrudergrind even.

Your eardrums will hurt from the very beginning with Hellbound Heart.

I love how Death Defier starts and its terrific part at 0:43.

What a power in Illogical, Imperfect or at 0:26 in Anti-Tomorrow !

The riff at 0:30 in Unpopular Bible Verse is a killer.

A very promising Ep.

Dope Body

Natural History

(2012, Drag City Records) USA, Baltimore.

Dope Body - Natural History

Dope Body’s new album is released !

So that time they didn’t add heavy reveb on the vocals. It is less monotonous : perfect !

There is amzing tracks on that album.

Road Dog is terrific and its chorus remains in mind. It’s like a modern version of Andrew WK. Live, that song was a killer.

Then you’ll find the same concepts in Powder with its great chorus at 0:48.

I do love the part at 3:00 in Twice The Life.

The effects on the guitar are still their signature : what a cool sound in Out Of My Mind, and what a vocal performance as well.

The drummer gives an impressive energy in Highway.

A must have in your collection !

Nupping

(2011, Hoss Records) USA, Baltimore.

Dope Body - Nupping

Dope Body is a rock / hardcore quatuor with a noise touch.

Pierre Templé introduced me to that band with their live in Paris @ L’espace B the 3rd of November 2012.

I loved their powerful live show.

One of the surprizing thing from this album is this constant guitar play with harmonics, like in the great Force Field or in The Shape Of Grunge To Come.

I love the part at 1:55 in Loner Stoner.

The rhytmic parts are great too like in the amazing Mr. Black.

My favorite song in that album is Bangers And Yos. The guitar’s effects and the power flowing out of that song are terrific.

I didn’t like the production on the vocals and I think that because they are drowned into too much reverb, it makes it monotonous along the album.

Good work.
