Puce Moment

Puce Moment

(2013, Tsunami Addiction) France.

Puce Moment - Puce Moment

Puce Moment is a new project by Nico and Penelope from the french band Cercueil.

It is an electro-ambient music, sometimes drone, with amazing ambiences.

It is indeed a kind of music I’m not familiar with, I just know a couple Autechre’s ambient’s albums.

“Puce Moment” requires to be focused and I came back to the record several time.

I have to admit that my grindcore-heart needs a rhythmic section to carry a song I may fall in love with.

I liked (Drive) with its organic synthesizers (terrific at 2:34) and I appreciate the vocal layers. The theme played on the synths is amazing too.

I enjoyed  Slw Dwn for the same reasons.

I found interesting that external rhythm which comes out of Video Dada here and there.

The part that rises at 4:33 in Legacy is a success.

Some good songs !

Kap Bambino

Devotion

(2012, Because Music) France.

Kap Bambino - Devotion

Here is Kap Bambino’s last album.

I have mixed feelings on that one, the production and sound is even better than the previous one, but in a less punk spirit.

My favortie song is Trapping but from 0:57 only, I really don’t like that intro, but then the brutality is perfect.

Devotion‘s chorus is pretty cool and this is good work on the effets and on the vocals processing.

The way they use choirs and saturation on Burning is a really good idea.

I love the part at 2:27 in Mer Morte.

The melody on the synthesizers in Resistance Alpha are great.

Some good songs.

Blacklist

(2009, Because Music) France.

Kap Bambino - Blacklist

Here is a new album by Kap Bambino,

It is a little less brutal than “Zero Life, Night Vision” but there is much more work on the melodies and it is a success. One song remains in the spirit of the previous album : Human Pills.

I love a lot the 8bit synthesizer and the guitar bass part in Lezard, it makes me think of squarepusher haha.

Blond Roses‘ chorus really remains in head.

Red Signs‘ Finale is really violent, as I like it, and I fo love the saturation on the vocals.

The part at 2:57 in Dead Lazers à la Mortal Kombat is a killer ! That song is terrific.

A very good album !

Kap Bambino - Zero Life, Night Vision

Kap Bambino is a french electro-trash-punk duo. Romain Cotton himself introduced me to their music, himself introduced by JB Pilon, himself intr…

Wow, what a filthy electro music with 8bit synthesizers, big saturation layers and weird melodies. All I like and this starts with New Breath.

I love the part at 0:41 in Took Life, how powerful !

The synthesizers and melodies in Save are amazing !

Hunger Texas is probably their best production work on that album.

The synthesizers work in Night Vision Ocean is huge too.

The LP got a pretty artwork.

A Must-have-in-your-collection.

Why Bother ?

(2007, Thrill Jockey Records) USA, Detroit.

Adult. - Why Bother ?

Here is ADULT.’s fourth album and probably the most unsane.

The darkest synthesizers are on my favorite song on that record named : Inclined To Vomit. The vocals are terrific and I love the part at 0:36.

Herd Me and R.S.x. make me think of some The Locust or Otto Von Schirach songs.

The mix electro and bass guitar on I Feel Worth When I’m With You is a success and the part at 0:43 kicks ass.

This bass guitar fusion works on Plagued By Fear as well.

(2005, Thrill Jockey Records) USA, Detroit.

Adult. - Gimmie Trouble

Third album by ADULT. and the synthesizers become darker compared to their early albums.

The rhythmbox part in Gimmie Trouble is amazing and I love the vocals in that song.

Then the bass guitar comes in the foreground in the sound of many tracks on that album like in Bad Ideas which remains in head.

I love Strange Mistakes, the vocals are really powerful and I love the dimension added by the bass guitar and the saturated guitar itself.

In the same way Turn Into Fever and Still Waiting are a succesful mix of electro/bass/guitar.

Adult. - Anxiety Always

“Anxiety Always” is the most linear album in ADULT.’s discography, that’s why it is my less favorite one.

Some of the songs are still great like Turn Your Back where the vocals rock.

My favorite song on that album is Blank Eyed, Nose Bleed with amazing soundscapes and a great chorus which remains in mind and a great Finale.

The sequencer in Nothing Of The Kind is really funny.

The artwork is cool and the glued eyelids are disgusting. I like.

Adult. - Resuscitation

ADULT. is an electro-clash duo from Detroit.

I discovered them randomly with the reissue of “Resuscitation” on vinyl.

That band is amazing, the synthesizers and rhythmboxes by Adam Lee Miller are amazinf like in the amazing Pressure Suit, What an amazing part at 2:47 ! Better than this, the robots are coming at 3:00 genius !

Nicola Kuperus’ vocals are amazing and I do love the vocoder effects, like in Lost Love. In that song, I can’t help throwing myself on the floor and breakdance on the part at 4:13.

New Object‘s riff is amazing and terrific part at 3:16.

Way too many amazing for now.

The high-pitched melody on the synthesizer all along Side-Swiped is charming.

You’ll remind for decades of Skinlike‘s theme.

(2005, 9pm Records) Finland.

Desert Planet - Mario Built My Hot Rod

I discovered that finnish 8bit-electro band on a french TV Show named Tracks a couple years ago.

Jukka Tarkiainen and Jari Mikkola were born too late and in the wrong country : Send them in 1994 to Sega, I would have love to listen to their songs in my Game Gear games.

Return Of The Ninja Droids is one of these melodies which will be engraved in your mind for decades (The videoclip is already a classic : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qGt1aO2lR4)

Breakout Button sounds is absolutely terrific, they play with my feelings : Awesome !

Four Snowmen‘s riff will remain in your mind as well (What a synthesizer !)

I Monster

Neveroddoreven

(2004, Dharma Records) France.

I Monster - Neveroddoreven

My great friend Pauline Donuts, introduced me to I Monster’s music with Heaven.

I Monster is an english electro-rock duo who plays a wide panel of music’s style.

Heaven is a total success. The vocoder effect on the vocals is perfectly brought. I’m really surprized of the rhythmic patterns. First time I heard that kind of effects was on Leila Arab’s songs (Mollie, 2008).

In a totally different universe, there is that english rock song that I love, still with the vocoder thing, named Hey Mrs. (Glamour Puss Mix).

Then comes Daydream In Blue that many people know, probably from a movie or an ad, but I start to get bored with that song.

Stobart’s Blues is cool.

Otto Von Schirach

Supermeng

(2012, Monkeytown Records) USA, Miami

Otto Von Schirach - Supermeng

The cherry on Otto’s talent pyramid : his new album.

What a success ! Otto made a perfect combination of his experimental thirst and catchy and dancing shapes.
In a “polluted-by-dubstep” electro scene, Otto bring new ideas and fine sounds : good point !
Just listen to When Dinosaurs Rule The Earth and you’ll get it (The videoclip here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_SFb4gNWHc&feature=share)
The beats and synthesizers are really well-done.
You may appreciate too the great electro-punk Ultimate Universe : modern.
Then comes Salpica (Miami) the single and its funny pitched vocals and its great video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ya4btyB2aAs

I really love too All Leather’s remix of My Supernatural Motorcycle Gang Will Knife You.

I loved seing Otto live with Gabe Serbian playing drums (The Locust). A very powerful and terrific duo !

My favorite track in that record is Her Blood Is Poison. It is a well-done and really original track. Jupiter. The rave song Satanic Unicorn Orgy is funny.

This album is for me the second best albums by Otto after “Supermeng”.
It is amazing as well for the soundscapes as for the rhythmic patterns.Let’s begin with the terrific G4 Scramblin and its clunchy beat.
Spine Yogurt is absolutely Grand sonorities-wise.
The work on vocals in Goat Sperm is great and Otto starts here his electro-grind tracks series.
I really like the harshed rhythms in Chango Limpia Mi Almo.

Happy mode on..

I love Oral Sax which a crazy song for its rhythmic patterns.

Same comments on Ska.

“Lambs Anger” is definitely a more “for the dancefloor” side than his other albums. Even though I was a little disappointed at first, I really appreciated it when I listen to these songs played live.

Positif is the great single with its catchy chorus “Vous êtes des animaux / You are animals”. I really love the part after the break at 1:04, simple but extremely powerful.

Erreur Jean is a hit in my heart : totally crazy.

Z is an other song à la “Quentin Dupieux’s movie soundtrack”

Moustache (Half A Scissor)

(2005, F-Com) France, Paris

Mr. Oizo - Moustache (Half a Scissor)

“Moustache (Half A Scissor)” is in my opinion, one of the best electro albums ever. This is a laboratory full of (still fresh) soundscapes, with breakbeats like those in Nurse Bob and finely, cut-up sampled vocals. I found exactly all I love about electro in this album : new modular synthesizers, complex and captivating rythmics. All this done with finely built musical layers.

I saw Mr. Oizo live twice in 2009 : The 7th of February at Culture Club in Gent, Belgium, and the 18th of September at Grande Halle de la Villette, Paris.

Of course, he mainly played his club songs from “Lambs Anger” but he did play two songs from “Moustache” : Stunt and Half a Scissor. It was during these two songs that Quentin Dupieux (aka Mr. Oizo) was at his best, jumping around behind his turntables and turning his buttons crazily, destroying his own music into experimental noise.

You should listen to this album in one shot, and then again and again (and again). I still discover new details after five of years of listening. This is the kind of masterpiece I love : one with a surprising or scary initial impression that proves to be real goldmine over time, where you have to dig again and again to understand the artist’s work.

This is another painful top 5 : there is nothing bad about this album.

Analog Worms Attack

(1999, F-Com) France, Paris

Mr. Oizo - Analog Worms Attack

Warning : Second best electro album from all times after “Moustache (Half A Scissor)”.

What is very impressive is that both of his first and second album are a huge hit, really original and totally differents electro-genre wise.

What is funny is when I was 14 I only liked Flat Beat. It’s only a couple years after that I realized the beauty I had in my hands.

Monophonic Shit : What a masterpiece ! and a marvelous synthesizer Finale !

No Day Massacre : What a masterpiece ! A la Gorillaz rhythmic patterns, but better. Terrific break at 2:07 !

Analog Worms Attack : What a masterpiece ! The synthesizers at 1:56 and the Finale : A Dream ! You’ll enjoy the videoclip he directed too : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8pzxyFZiI8

Last Night A DJ Killed My Dog : What a masterpiece ! And its great guitar samples.

Let’s congratulate Feadz to I love the song Feadz On and the break at 0:56.

It’s funny that Quentin always present his work as light and easy in the interviews but even though he may work fast, his music is really fine.

The break-beat + disto on the drums + death-synthesizers is a sucessful cocktail !

Flat Beat (Ep)

(1999, F-Com)

Mr. Oizo Flat Beat (Ep)

I discovered Mr. Oizo in middle school, in 1999, during a trip to Kent, England. My parents gave me pocket money, and I had to spend it there of course. Instead of investing it in Toblerones like some of my friends did (I won’t mention names but they now play with me in H.O.Z.), I used the money to buy CDs, choosing by the cover.

That’s how I ended up with the 3 track version “Flat Beat” Ep (thinking I was buying a full length CD – haha!). I was immediately fascinated by the weirdness of the synthetizers, that I used to call “musical noise” and by the songs Flat Beat and Monday Massacre.

It was only the following summer (when Quentin Dupieux became famous in France with his Levi’s commercial that featured Flat Eric) that I learned he was French. Before that, I thought that it was avant-garde English music (young fool that I was). That was the beginning of a true musical love story.

For some reason I don’t really like the first track (too cheesy maybe) and I prefer Fineshrine.

The Tuss - Rushup Edge

First album for The Tuss.

Let’s start with the main point : Death Fuck Mental Beats is work of art.

As for the rhythmic patterns, as for the synthesizers and innovation : all is absolutely terrific in that song.

You can keep every second and hail to its amazing finale at 4:12.

The other tracks are closest to the first ep tracks.

Let’s start with the catchy Synthacon 9,

In Last Rusp Up 10 F I really love the part at 4:02 and its great synthesizer.

Shiz Ko E is a funky song, fresh and with an interesting evolving.

Rush Up I Bank 12 reminds me a lot of Aphex Twin, and I like how they switch the drumkits and the shutter effects.

First Ep for The Tuss.

I think this album created itself-self.

So we are clearly in the Aphex twin vein.

Alspacka is a great, fresh and harmonic song. The synthesizers are Grand and the mouth noises well-done. I really love the break final at 4:21.
